One for Safety: Patriots Secondary Shows New Wrinkle vs. Buccaneers in Week 3 | Oliver Thomas – NEPatriotsDraft.com

One for Safety: Patriots Secondary Shows New Wrinkle vs. Buccaneers in Week 3 | Oliver Thomas – NEPatriotsDraft.com

Nice read from Oliver Thomas about the Pats’ single safety look vs. the Buccaneers. I’ve been back through the first half of All-22 and outside of this package they were mixing things up a little more on the back end and up front in this one.

In the first couple weeks we saw a lot of Cover 1 Robber. Clearly BB likes what he’s seeing from his trio of starting corners playing man coverage and that allowed him to use the single safety look.

Random fact of the day: At 139-39, Tom Brady is the first QB in @nfl history to have 100 more wins than losses.

Patriots defense playing well, but next three games will provide challenge – Ben Volin – The Boston Globe

Patriots defense playing well, but next three games will provide challenge – Ben Volin – The Boston Globe

Ah yes, the old “they haven’t beaten anybody yet” argument. Look, I’m not going to say they’ve faced a great QB yet, but how many great QBs are there really in the NFL? 5-10 tops?

And let’s look back at the QBs who have put up over 300 yards passing in the last three seasons:

  • Chad Henne (x 3)
  • Carson Palmer
  • Vince Young
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick (x 3)
  • Jason Campbell
  • Dan Orlovsky
  • Tony Romo

So I think the big takeaway is that by just shutting two rookie QBs and an about-to-be-benched one, and doing what they’re supposed to do, that qualifies as progress.

Tedy Bruschi’s Breakdown — Falcons dangerous, yet vulnerable – ESPN Boston

Tedy Bruschi’s Breakdown — Falcons dangerous, yet vulnerable – ESPN Boston

I’m envisioning Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower as a key player with Gonzalez in mind. He’s shown the ability to reroute tight ends at the line of scrimmage with a powerful jam. Gonzalez’s consistency is remarkable; he has caught at least one pass in 198 consecutive games. Here’s another stat that caught my attention: The Falcons attempted 30 rushes last week against the Dolphins (146 yards) and, in their first two games combined – a loss to the Saints and a win over the Rams – they had 30 rushing attempts. So, from a pure numbers standpoint, there was a renewed commitment to run and balance things out in Week 3.

Waiting for the game to start and I’m looking back at some old game film, this shot from the 2009 Bills opener. This was always a defensive front that intrigued me and it was one we only saw in limited use in 2009. Technically it’s a 4-3, with the defensive line Warren-Wilfork-Wright-Green. Obviously the defensive […]
