Tedy Bruschi’s Breakdown — New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals – ESPN Boston

This is what scares me, Bernard especially vs. the sub defense.

I don’t know how you don’t attack the interior of the Patriots defense after the loss of Vince Wilfork. I think you have to recognize what type of scheme Bill Belichick will come up with in the first series – will he use Joe Vellano at defensive tackle, will he use Chris Jones? Do they line up in a 3-4 and just send Brandon Spikes in running-down situational plays, almost as a defensive lineman into the line of scrimmage. With A.J. Green on the outside and the running game on the inside, it’s a good combination for the Bengals. Green-Ellis is that downhill-type runner who can exploit the loss of Wilfork. This defense knows how hard he runs, the lower-body strength he has, the balance and how he can turn a 2-yard run into a 4- or 5-yard gain just based on his strength, balance and how he runs with forward lean. And Bernard is the change-of-pace running back, but he can also hit the hole or take it outside.

Joe is a hard-working kid. He has good instincts, he kind of has a nose for the ball and a good feel for what’s going on,” Belichick said. “He had an opportunity to get some playing time as we went through preseason and he took advantage of those opportunities, made a few plays, had some production, and it probably led to a little bit more opportunity. “I think that there are a lot of things that he’s improved in, in terms of technique and recognition and reaction. He’s got a long way to go, but he’s definitely making progress. “He’s usually the first one on and the last one off the field, or close to it. He puts in a lot of extra time, tries to get better at the things he needs to work on, and that’s helped him.

Great read on Joe Vellano from Shalise Manza-Young.

A perfect example of what a running game can do has been the Patriots. Through three weeks, a struggling pass offense helped keep New England to a 13.7 percent DVOA (11th in the NFL). Despite a lack of dependable targets for quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots had a 60/40 pass-run balance playing three games that were either close or in which they had command of (Bucs). But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in their best victory of the season, the Patriots had a perfect run/pass balance of 31 rushes and 31 pass attempts against the Falcons. As a result, the New England jumped to seventh in DVOA. Their overall number took a dip—mostly because the defense gave up a bunch of yards after the Falcons trailed by double digits—but their offensive DVOA went from –10.7 percent (23rd) to 2.6 percent (15th).

Rank the remaining games in terms of level of difficulty. Here’s mine: 1. @GB; 2 @Colts; 3 Dolphins; 4 @San Diego; 5 Lions; 6. Bills 7. @NYJ. Not as bad as first thought. SD has come down to Earth, the Jets should be packing it in by week 16, the Colts have no defense. Green Bay will be tough (on the road against an unfamiliar opponent). Dolphins and Bills (maybe) should be playing for something.

Here’s mine, basically the same except at the top. 7. @ Jets – just a chance to rub some salt in the wound that it is the 2014 season for them. 6. Bills – Garoppolo time! 5. Lions – good test, but I think the Pats will be ready for them after the beatings they […]
