Patriots vs. Jets: Takeaways from New York’s 30-27 Overtime Win over New England
No, I went looking and looking, and I managed to find 86 undrafted rookie free agents on active rosters. Let me know if you find more or fewer, and I’ll apologize to those omitted. One team (Cleveland) seems to have eight of them. Three teams (Minnesota, Tennessee and Washington) seem to have none. New Orleans has six; Tampa Bay and St. Louis, five each. Of those 86, I found 29 who turned up in box scores from Sunday. Twelve of those seem to have made one tackle each, with a special nod here to a Mr. Nickell Robey of the Buffalo Bills, an URFA from USC whose solo tackle had the distinction of causing a loss. Nine of the 29 got little stars beside their names on my yellow-legal-pad sheets. I’m sure they’re elated. I’m sure their parents are gushing to the neighbors. Three of those nine played for New England.

We went through each game and tallied up the blitz totals — with a huge assist from ProFootballFocus.com — and found that yes, indeed, the Patriots aren’t blitzing a whole lot this year. They are blitzing on 22.2 percent of passing plays, ranked 26th in the NFL. The league average is 31.3 percent. But the Patriots are 13th in pass defense and third in points allowed, so the tactic is working well.

The Patriots are always a conservative defense, and if they’re blitzing a lot, it means they’re trying to cover up a weakness. In a perfect world you can get pressure with your front four and never have to blitz. Sorry to those looking for an “attacking” defense that is sending defensive backs all the time.

The Patriots enter today’s game against the Jets having won 12 straight games against AFC East opponents. That is the longest active NFL streak against division foes, and the fifth-longest win streak since the 1970 NFL merger. The record is 15 straight, held by the 1972-73 Miami Dolphins.
