Mike, I feel like the Pats are playing with two FSs in Devin McCourty and Steve Gregory when D-Mac should be complemented with a real Rodney Harrison-type SS. Do you think they drafted Dustin Harmon with that in mind or we should not expect more from him than playing a dime DB role, then making addressing the position a top need in the offseason?

Well I think in today’s NFL you really want to have two hybrid safeties who can play both up front and on the back end. I do like what I’ve seen out of Harmon so far. I think he could really develop into a nice compliment to McCourty. As for Gregory I think he’s been better this season than he was last year. He’s definitely missed some tackles, but he’s been the primary strong safety, and played a lot of “robber” coverage where he comes down into the box trying to read the quaterback and make a play. I like his aggressiveness and smarts, but the missed tackles have been noticeable.

I think it’s a pretty good three-man group, how it plays out next year is hard to say, but I could see them staying with this group. Perhaps most interesting is how Tavon Wilson has fallen off the map. Not too many expressing the usual outrage that a second round pick has been reduced to solely a special teamer.

NFL Week 15 key moments: Patriots-Dolphins, Saints-Rams, Falcons-Redskins | The MMQB with Peter King

NFL Week 15 key moments: Patriots-Dolphins, Saints-Rams, Falcons-Redskins | The MMQB with Peter King

Here’s the breakdown of the 4th-and-5 play, had to know this one was coming. The crazy thing is if Ninkovich gets a hand on it, or Logan Ryan makes the tackle, the game is over and the Pats are getting all the love this week.

But the Dolphins made the play and it changes this week’s storylines to all the down and depressed stuff you’re hearing now. One play is the difference. Welcome to the craziness of being a football fan and analyst.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 15 DVOA Ratings

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 15 DVOA Ratings

Here are the latest DVOA rankings as the Patriots defense continues their decline to an average-at-best squad. But hey, the offense still looks pretty good.

Perhaps the most-telling offensive stat though for this Patriots team is their VARIANCE, which measures how consistent they are from drive to drive. They’re 27th.

The defense is more consistent, they’re 13th in Variance. So consistently slightly-below-average.

Overall: 6th

Offense: 5th

  • Pass 8th
  • Run 9th

Defense: 21st

  • Pass 16th
  • Run 21st
  • vs #1 WR: 13th
  • vs. #2 WR: 30th
  • vs. Other WR: 21st
  • vs. TE: 16th
  • vs. RB: 17th

Special Teams: 3rd

A lot of times we have multiple options in the huddle, and sometimes you end up with the perfect blend and perfect balance when you do that, and sometimes the defense, when you’re trying to get certain things against a specific look, sometimes you can get a little skewed,” he said. “We certainly don’t want to take the freedom away from our quarterback to get us into a good play and we don’t want to become just a call-it-on-the-sideline team when we have a quarterback that’s capable of doing a lot of good things with our offense at the line of scrimmage.

New England Patriots’ Josh McDaniels talks red zone, run game – ESPN Boston

As I’ve said before I really don’t get into criticizing the “play-calling” because we just don’t have enough information. Did Brady change the play at the line? Did someone run the wrong route? It’s just not as simple as ‘wow, McDaniels is calling bad plays’.
