Was this the moment Belichick said to himself “I gotta sign that guy”?

Brandon Browner signs 3-year deal with Patriots

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

It’s finally official!

Between Revis and Browner, it’s hard to remember a more exciting time in the Patriots secondary. Who knows how it will all come together, with Browner out the first four games, serving his suspension, but after that the Pats have incredible versatility and depth in their secondary now and have the ability to matchup with any offense.

The days of having only cornerbacks under 5’10" are over!

Filed to ESPN: CB Brandon Browner told me he’s agreed to join the Patriots. “I’m taking a 3-year deal to play for New England.”

So the Patriots either pay Revis $20M next year and take a $25M cap hit (with the $5M pushed forward). They push away from the table and take a $5M dead money cap hit. Or they renegotiate, extend Revis’ deal, keep a great player as he enters the autumn of his career and have a core of Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Jerod Mayo, Darrelle Revis, Chandler Jones, Donta Hightower, Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Danny Amendola through about 2017.

Hey Mike! Been following Pats Prop for a few years now. You’ve said that you’re all about the “football look”. I personally think Dobson should ditch the #17. Anyway, who’s name/ number combination would you change and why?

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Whoever you are you clearly have been reading the prop for a few years now because this is the kind of question that gets me fired up, Bruschi-style!

I can’t agree more on Dobson. Maybe it’s just the bad luck of 17 in recent years for receivers who we were excited about – namely Chad Jackson and Taylor Price. But it’s just not an elite outside wide receiver number, he really needs to get into the 80s, ideally to 88. But he made his choice and now he has to live with it I guess. But someday I want to get a badass #88 WR on the Pats and it’s available unless they re-sign Mulligan.

As for others I’d like to change Chandler Jones’ 95 is at the top of the list. It’s grown on me somewhat, but it’s my least favorite of the 90 numbers (and yes I know this sounds stupid).

The big question of the offseason will be who gets 55. That’s a prime number and hopefully has a nasty rookie linebacker written all over it. Spikes was perfect for it, but alas it didn’t work out.

52’s a good available one as well.

How do you think revis affects the front seven and the pass rush?

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

He buys them some extra time when the QB wants to go to his number one target, but there still has to be additions to the front seven.

As good as Revis is, the front seven is more important than the secondary. They’re involved in every play and are closest to the most important opposing player, the quarterback.

As I’ve said before, I’d love to see a solid move at defensive end. Jared Allen, Julius Peppers, Cory Wooten are just a few of the guys still out there.

Time for the question I think everyone will ask: Is Revis going to be the same player we saw twice a year before his injury? I don’t remember hearing his name pop up a lot last season.

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

He’s going to be better and he was still very, very good in Tampa last year even though they weren’t great about playing to his strengths. BB won’t make that mistake.

Players coming off an ACL injury usually need a full year to recover even if they return to the field within six months. Nate Burleson mentioned this on NFL Network the other night. It’s that second season back that you’re fully confident in the knee and get your full quickness and ability to cut back.

I’d expect we’ll see Revis in his prime this year. As for Gronk, we might have to wait until 2015, and that’s assuming he has a good enough 2014 that the Pats trigger the next phase of his contract.

I find fascinating that again, when eveyone in the media analysts and the fans is calling for New England to address the TE, 3rd DE and interior OL positions in free agency, Belichick just goes get a new #1 and #2 corners that can play man and press

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Part of it is that’s how the market unfolded. There’s no question they needed a top cornerback, with Talib being the most likely target. Outside of Demarcus Ware and Lamarr Houston, there really haven’t been many defensive ends flying off the board.

Let’s also not forget that they did re-sign Hooman, so that is a way address Tight End, and they had quite a few interior OL and DE Matt Shaughnessy visit.

So ultimately I think we’re all on track for what the needs are, it’s just played out in a different order than we might’ve expected.
