Asked the defining characteristic of the overall draft, Caserio cited the record number of underclassmen (nearly 100) and pinpointed receiver, running back and defensive line as spots with good depth. The inclusion of defensive line was a bit of an outlier compared to what we’ve heard from most media analysts. Defensive end, in particular, has been cited by many as one of the lighter positions in the draft, but Caserio and the Patriots might see it differently. “I’d say there’s a deep group of defensive linemen that are different types of players,” he said.

Top takeaways from director of Patriots player personnel Nick Caserio – ESPN Boston

I don’t hate the depth at defensive line, there’s just some uncertainty about Wilfork and Kelly, but if they’re good to go I’d roll into the season with this group no problem. The problem is at defensive end. And while the depth at running back is okay, they still need another rotational guy, especially with Ridley and Vereen in the last years of their contracts.

The perception of Bill, they don’t really see Bill outside of his interviews,” Ninkovich told Sirius XM NFL Radio. “He’s a funny guy, he has a great sense of humor and he’s the best football coach ever for a reason. He knows what he’s talking about. He knows how to get the best and the most out of each individual person. So the way he speaks, you definitely listen to the things that he says. You try to write down and absorb as much as you can. He has a ton of knowledge of the game. Walking around the locker room, walking around the facility, he’ll talk to you. He’s the best football coach I’ve been around. There is a definitely difference in the perception of what he is from the media versus what he really is.
“He’s always available if you need to speak to him. That’s another thing he always says, ‘just come to me’ and he’ll tell you it like it is. He won’t sugarcoat anything for you. That’s what you want — honest answers. As a football player, that’s a great thing, to be able to go to your head coach and be able to ask him a question and have him give you a straight-up answer. A lot of people just see an interview, some media guy asking him a dumb question and he likes to give it back to those guys especially.”

We have to get off the field on third downs better. I think we had too many third-and-longs converted. That’s another thing that hurts you, when it’s third-and-15 and they run a screen and they get the first down. That comes down to assignments, guys running after the ball, running lanes where you’re at, it all works together.

Ninkovich: Long story not a happy ending – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Been hitting on this theme recently in the last week – getting off the field on third down, there’s no defense in the NFL that has been worse over the last four seasons. It’s a critical area and one that could make an instant impact if improved.

Handing Out Real Patriots Rookie Numbers

In case you missed it this spring, Bill Belichick was up to some new tricks with the rookies, not giving them numbers that fit their positions but instead just handing out numbers starting at 50 in order (h/t to NESN’s Doug Kyed for cracking that code). Some rookie numbers that won’t stick: Wynn 50 Michel […]
