Quarterback Tom Brady delivered two plays that stood out – a beautiful fade pass to receiver Kenbrell Thompkins on the left side of the end zone (cornerback Brandon Browner in coverage) in red-zone drills, and a sweet throw to tight end Michael Hoomanawanui up the right seam (linebacker Jerod Mayo in coverage). Brady, who turns 37 in August, looks like he’s on top of his game as those weren’t the only plays that made us take note.

Tweets of note from Wednesday’s Patriots Minicamp Practice

June 18, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Headlines today are that Darrelle Revis didn’t finish the session and Josh Boyce pulled up with what’s probably a hamstring tweak and didn’t finish either. Otherwise, more of the same with the rookies showing some promise, especially Garoppolo, who is benefiting from Ryan Mallett’s absence. In the long term this Mallett injury could really be beneficial to the Pats as Garoppolo is immediately getting a ton of work.

Here are the tweets of note…

Josh Boyce has a left leg injury and didn’t practice. Got stretched out early but watched the rest of practice. Setback for huge offseason.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) June 18, 2014

Roughly midway thru practice, Gronk and Slater emerged from the practice field and ran sprints up far hill behind practice field.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 18, 2014

Rookie Jon Halapio continues to get a lot of reps at guard with a reasonable facsimile of the starting offensive line.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 18, 2014

I sound like a broken record, but Daxton Swanson was all over the field again today. Two INTs and a pass breakup.

— Doug Kyed (@DougKyedNESN) June 18, 2014

Darrelle Revis did not finish practice, though reporters didn’t see him exit field

— shalise manza young (@shalisemyoung) June 18, 2014

Brandon LaFell returned to practice, but it looked like Josh Boyce tweaked something in the warmup line and didn’t participate.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) June 18, 2014

Without Mallett, Garoppolo got more reps. Like yesterday, a good day for the rookie–more good than bad throughout session.

[Wilfork] has made more progress than I think anybody really expected to at this point. He was out there for the entire practice yesterday, but his reps were extremely limited over the last few sets of 11-on-11 drills. This is progress from the previous two times we’ve seen him. He used to be out there for an hour of practice then go rehab inside the bubble (Dana Farber Fieldhouse). I think the fact they’re keeping him out there means the rehab schedule has changed and they’re more confident in the progress he’s making.

Cleaning out the Patriots minicamp notebook – ESPN Boston

Cleaning out the Patriots minicamp notebook – ESPN Boston

Good look at some of the depth along the offensive line. Braxton Cave and Josh Kline are two guys we haven’t talked much about this offseason, despite believing offensive line was really in need of the boost it got in the draft. It boils down to having really good competition for camp and the injury insurance that kind of depth provides. I think that the starting fivesome when the season starts could be surprising.

Armstead still a huge mystery | Sports – Patriots | providencejournal.com | The Providence Journa

Nice long look at the enigma that is Armond Armstead. Sounds like Armstead is really having a rough go of it, but until we see him on the practice field again it’s probably best to lower our expectations. Hopefully he can recover from whatever he’s dealing with and make it back out there for training camp.

Now this is perfect coverage. In phase, looking back for the ball. This Darrelle Revis guy might be pretty good for us…

Defensive linemen Will Smith, Tommy Kelly and Vince Wilfork were all full participants for all two hours of practice. That’s a promising sign for a defensive line rotation that was ravaged by injuries last season. Wilfork, in particular, has looked much improved over OTAs, where he appeared to be lumbering around a bit.

I always knew Mike was going to be a coach just because of the way he carried himself on the field. Being able to play with him and see him now as a coach, he’s the same guy. I tell guys all the time, if Vrabel gets in shape right now he probably could still […]
