Can Brady and the pats offense thrive with a mediocre offensive line?

August 15, 2014 by Mike Dussault

No offense can, but the yearly offensive line freakout is always overblown. Pretty sure if Brady takes more than one sack tonight the panic that Scarnecchia is no longer around will set in. But it happens every summer, even when he was here.

After quarterback-wide receiver timing, offensive line coordination is the hardest thing on offense to get up to speed.

Are there questions right now based on shoddy preseason play and constant rotation? Sure. But I think the arrow is pointing up for this unit when you consider the young depth they now have to develop.

And really, if they have to go back to last year’s starting five plus Cannon they’ll still be fine. As much flack as the offensive line caught in 2013, that was very much tied to the new receivers on offense as it was poor play by the offensive line.

The year of development for the receivers will do a lot for the protection.

Do you think Tyms could get a few first team reps just to see how he would work with Brady given his performance against the Redskins?

August 15, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Yeah I’d be all for that, but I’m sure the coaches have a much better idea of how legit Tyms is than we do. They’ve seen him going up against their best defenders in practice.

More important is to see some consistency out of Thompkins as well as what LaFell can do with Brady. Don’t think we’ll see Dobson in a game until next week at the earliest and possibly not until the last preseason game. Those three are the real question marks as the compliment to Amendola and Edelman.

With the rise of 11 personnel, that third wide receiver will essentially be a starter and I don’t think any of those three guys has the position sewn up just yet.

If the pats are not happy with the tightend depth, why not sign Keller or Finley

August 15, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Seems like they’re not ready otherwise I’m sure someone else would’ve signed them as well. I think it’s safe to say that the Pats will be making more moves at the position before the season starts. Maybe even right after cutdowns, there’s always a lot of unexpected movement at that time.

One thing they cannot afford to do is hurry Gronk into the lineup, then throw him right into the fire playing every snap. Ideally you’d limit the amount of blocking he has to do. Maybe even just use him more as an “F” tight end, especially in the red zone. That’s where his biggest impact is.

With Mayo not participating in practice the past three days, and veteran James Anderson a bit banged up and not expected to play, this is the type of opportunity third-year linebacker Darius Fleming has been waiting for. The former Notre Dame product who missed the first two years of his career with the 49ers because of knee injuries, has been playing both on the line and off the line, and this week was integrated more into the top special-teams mix. He’s making a hard push for a roster spot and based on circumstances that have unfolded outside of his control, he should have a nice opportunity to show what he can do Friday night.

Key areas for New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles – ESPN Boston

Good guy to watch tonight, and he could be in there sooner than later assuming Mayo isn’t playing. Sometimes I find myself more excited in the second half to see the guys going all out to make the team than the guys who are just going through the motions to get ready for the regular season.

Let’s Also Not Forget The Jets Passed the Patriots Back In April I get it. It can’t be easy having to write about football all year round when it’s your job and you don’t have the passion of say, an uber-blogger like myself. But why do the mediots write stuff like this?  One of the […]
