BREAKING – Patriots releasing WR Mohamed Sanu

September 2, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

First reported by Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are releasing veteran WR Mohamed Sanu.

Source: The #Patriots are releasing veteran WR Mohamed Sanu. A surprise.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 2, 2020

A bit of a surprise this one, initially at the beginning of camp, I thought Sanu could be a cut candidate given his poor first season in New England along with his injury issues, but following a fairly strong camp, I had him as a lock, but no more.

The Patriots acquired Sanu in a trade last year with Atlanta, where the team exchanged their 2020 second-round draft pick for his services. On reflection, fans will look back at this being one of the poorer trades of Belichick’s last decade as HC.

The release didn’t make the wire today, so there’s still a chance a team may come in to trade for him, but one thing’s for sure, his time in Foxborough is now over.

My new Patriots salary cap number after accounting for Mohamed Sanu’s release is $37,088,635.

— Patscap's Patriots Cap Space Number is in Bio (@patscap) September 2, 2020

Per @patscap the release of Sanu will not inflict a dead cap hit and has created $5.75m in cap space.

Look out for my final 53-man roster projection which is being released tomorrow!

Is Leonard Fournette really an option for the Patriots?

September 2, 2020 by Jason Pombo

Leonard Fournette waived: 3 NFL teams who should sign running back
Image: Getty Images

After three seasons in Jacksonville, the Jaguars have released the 4th overall pick pick in the 2017 draft, Leonard Fournette. The 25-year-old Fournette is coming off a season in which he had a career high in a number of statistical categories. Fournette had a career high in games played, rushing yards, yards per carry, and receptions. But, Fournette’s departure in Jacksonville shouldn’t come as a surprise. He had previous issues with head coach Doug Marrone, and reportedly has been on the trade block for quite some time.

Fournette cleared waivers and can officially sign with any team. At this point in time, Fournette’s market is unknown, but according to BetOnline, the Patriots are co-favorites to land Fournette at 11-4 odds.

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#12 8/30

August 30, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Turns out I was wrong about Friday being the final open media practice of camp, reporters clambered into the training facility one final time today. So, for the second time, here are the final Tweets of Note from camp.

Final day of training camp: Chase Winovich is absent for the second consecutive practice. Michael Jackson, Beau Allen and Lamar Miller also out.

Devin McCourty and Cassh Maluia are back.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 30, 2020

DE Chase Winovich missed his second straight practice today (not overly concerned, no official word regarding his absence), CB Michael Jackson was also missing. A positive on Friday was the appearance of DT Beau Allen for the first time this Training Camp, which was short-lived as Allen was missing again today.

Patriots Sunday supplement 8/30

August 30, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Another week of Patriots practice in the books that ended with a walk-through session inside Gillette Stadium. Plenty of news to cover from the past week, so let’s get our Sunday check-in from training camp.

Camp News

Some positive news out of the WR position was the return of N’Keal Harry from a number of missed sessions. The even more reassuring factor was the notable performances Harry put in against the defense. In a season where the team desperately needs him to make his second-year jump, Harry has started to show signs of his true abilities, whilst also building some chemistry with QB Cam Newton.

Patriots sign rookie FA WR Andre Baccellia

August 29, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Following a successful workout with the Patriots on Wednesday, WR Andre Baccellia was officially signed by the team today.

Following WR Will Hastings’ exit on Friday, it was rumored that the team would bring in another body at the position.

After going undrafted this year, Baccellia signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on April 30, before being released on August 19.

Baccellia played in 48 games during his collegiate career at Washington and caught 107 passes for 1,183 yards and five touchdowns. A speedy receiver who also ran a 4.28 40 at his pro-day.

Unfortunately, now media access to practice has ended, we won’t get much coverage on the latest signing, my thoughts are that he probably won’t make the 53-man roster which is due to be cut down next weekend, a potential candidate for the PS though.

With news that the #Patriots plan to sign wide receiver Andre Baccellia, I watched a few games of his and I wanted to make a thread on him!

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#11 8/28

August 28, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Earlier I found out that today would be the last media attended practice allowed during camp, so for one final time this season, here are today’s Tweets of Note.

Great way to close out camp access. Looks like they’re going thru a dry run of warmups. pic.twitter.com/NNVS49L3nw

— Mike Dussault (@MikeDussault19) August 28, 2020

The Patriots moved the practice into Gillette Stadium today for what we anticipated to be a full-speed scrimmage session. Unfortunately, it was a glorified walkthrough in shorts and shells.

Patriots release WR Will Hastings

August 28, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

News coming in today that the Patriots have waived WR Will Hastings. Hardly a surprise in all fairness, Hastings has struggled to remain on the practice field following a number of absences during camp, he’s now been cut for a second time, which will probably be for good.

The Patriots have waived WR Will Hastings out of Auburn. He was a slot target who played with Jarrett Stidham in college.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 28, 2020

I wrote in yesterday’s Tweets of Note that hopes of rekindling the “Auburn connection” between him and QB Jarrett Stidham were all but over, now confirmed.

This move will drop the current roster number to 79, and following a number of WR tryouts on Wednesday, I’d expect to see a new face added over the weekend.

FA WR’s at tryouts – Andre Baccellia (University of Washington/Chiefs), Greg Dortch (Wake Forest/Jets-Panthers-Rams), Tony Gaiter (Florida International) and Matthew Sexton (Eastern Michigan)

Current WR depth – Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Mohamed Sanu Sr., Damiere Byrd, Devin Ross, Jeff Thomas, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, Isaiah Zuber

It’s more technique,” he noted on Saturday. “I think I know most of the stuff we do here [from] the defensive standpoint, [but] you can always learn more. But technique and as we get into the season seeing different teams, seeing what they do and viewing it from the corner standpoint and the safety standpoint […]
