Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#11 8/28

August 28, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Earlier I found out that today would be the last media attended practice allowed during camp, so for one final time this season, here are today’s Tweets of Note.

Great way to close out camp access. Looks like they’re going thru a dry run of warmups. pic.twitter.com/NNVS49L3nw

The Patriots moved the practice into Gillette Stadium today for what we anticipated to be a full-speed scrimmage session. Unfortunately, it was a glorified walkthrough in shorts and shells.

A planning and contingency session, something new for the organization to work around after having no pre-season games.

Chase Winovich, Cassh Maluia, Will Hastings and Lamar Miller aren’t present for the in-stadium practice, which is essentially a walkthrough.

Some positives here, firstly, LG Joe Thuney was in attendance after a scare in yesterday’s session. Although he had a wrapped hand, it’s a sign that he’ll be able to play through the injury moving forward.

Secondly, DT Beau Allen made his first appearance of this year’s training camp, now, it wasn’t a fully tilted practice in pads, but great to have Allen back in the mix after signing with the team during free agency, a big addition to the DT group.

New players missing were DE Chase Winovich, LB Cassh Maluia, and WR Will Hastings, who was later released after practice.

RB Lamar Miller remains on the PUP/active list.

Brian Hoyer faked a leg injury so Stidham had to come in, in the middle of drive. The Patriots are simulating every scenario here.

Planning for anything and everything, Belichick even instructed QB Brian Hoyer to fake an injury so the team could go about dealing with the issue in a live game situation.

Coaches went about rehearsing substitutions, using windows tablets, and even changing headsets in the instance that they’d have some tech issues during a game.

Defensive stats in team drills: pic.twitter.com/Trg3cNrwi9

For stats fanatics, some of the standouts lay in the defensive section. Now, take the stats with a pinch of salt as you can’t compare them like for like with actual game numbers, but a great indicator for how involved some of the new guys have been.

The white noise being pumped in is just standard crowd buzz, but it’s loud enough that masked people sitting six feet from each other can’t hear one another real well. It’s weird. Sounds like a mob of zombies just beyond the Gillette walls with an occasional whistle sprinkled in.

— Phil Perry (@PhilAPerry) August 28, 2020

This will be something to get used to, for anyone hoping for games without any synthetic crowd noise, that won’t be happening. Unlike the NBA/NHL, the NFL won’t want anything to do with natural-sounding games, more than likely so they can protect play calling for teams, etc.

In reality, the NFL will probably set a standard for all teams to have the same level of noise during games, but as today’s session was around being prepared, the Pats will have this covered whatever the sound is like come Week 1 against Miami.

Well that wraps up Tweets of Note for this years Training Camp! Thanks for tuning in, and make sure to keep an eye out for all of our upcoming content as we head towards the regular season!

State of the Patriots, on eve of the draft – Patriots – Boston.com It will be interesting to see if there is a true competition between Ridley and Bolden for primary ball carrier. Before Bolden’s four-game suspension in 2012, he was challenging Ridley for touches, even as Ridley was on his way to the fourth-best […]
