Patriots Sunday supplement 8/30

August 30, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Another week of Patriots practice in the books that ended with a walk-through session inside Gillette Stadium. Plenty of news to cover from the past week, so let’s get our Sunday check-in from training camp.

Camp News

Some positive news out of the WR position was the return of N’Keal Harry from a number of missed sessions. The even more reassuring factor was the notable performances Harry put in against the defense. In a season where the team desperately needs him to make his second-year jump, Harry has started to show signs of his true abilities, whilst also building some chemistry with QB Cam Newton.

Patriots sign rookie FA WR Andre Baccellia

August 29, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Following a successful workout with the Patriots on Wednesday, WR Andre Baccellia was officially signed by the team today.

Following WR Will Hastings’ exit on Friday, it was rumored that the team would bring in another body at the position.

After going undrafted this year, Baccellia signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on April 30, before being released on August 19.

Baccellia played in 48 games during his collegiate career at Washington and caught 107 passes for 1,183 yards and five touchdowns. A speedy receiver who also ran a 4.28 40 at his pro-day.

Unfortunately, now media access to practice has ended, we won’t get much coverage on the latest signing, my thoughts are that he probably won’t make the 53-man roster which is due to be cut down next weekend, a potential candidate for the PS though.

With news that the #Patriots plan to sign wide receiver Andre Baccellia, I watched a few games of his and I wanted to make a thread on him!

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#11 8/28

August 28, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Earlier I found out that today would be the last media attended practice allowed during camp, so for one final time this season, here are today’s Tweets of Note.

Great way to close out camp access. Looks like they’re going thru a dry run of warmups. pic.twitter.com/NNVS49L3nw

— Mike Dussault (@MikeDussault19) August 28, 2020

The Patriots moved the practice into Gillette Stadium today for what we anticipated to be a full-speed scrimmage session. Unfortunately, it was a glorified walkthrough in shorts and shells.

Patriots release WR Will Hastings

August 28, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

News coming in today that the Patriots have waived WR Will Hastings. Hardly a surprise in all fairness, Hastings has struggled to remain on the practice field following a number of absences during camp, he’s now been cut for a second time, which will probably be for good.

The Patriots have waived WR Will Hastings out of Auburn. He was a slot target who played with Jarrett Stidham in college.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 28, 2020

I wrote in yesterday’s Tweets of Note that hopes of rekindling the “Auburn connection” between him and QB Jarrett Stidham were all but over, now confirmed.

This move will drop the current roster number to 79, and following a number of WR tryouts on Wednesday, I’d expect to see a new face added over the weekend.

FA WR’s at tryouts – Andre Baccellia (University of Washington/Chiefs), Greg Dortch (Wake Forest/Jets-Panthers-Rams), Tony Gaiter (Florida International) and Matthew Sexton (Eastern Michigan)

Current WR depth – Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Mohamed Sanu Sr., Damiere Byrd, Devin Ross, Jeff Thomas, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, Isaiah Zuber

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#10 8/27

August 27, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Due to some adverse weather around Foxborough, today’s practice was brought forward to a 09:15 start. Pads were back on, refs were in attendance, and one side of the ball still continues to dominate. I present today’s Tweets of Note, along with my thoughts.

Absent on Day 10 of camp: Devin McCourty, Lamar Miller, Cassh Maluia, Will Hastings, Josh Uche, Beau Allen

New: Uche and Maluia

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 27, 2020

LB Cassh Maluia missed his first practice of camp today, along with fellow rookie LB Josh Uche. These guys have been performing well so far, and have real shot at being part of the LB playing group come the regular season, let’s hope they’re back tomorrow.

This is Cam Newton’s team

August 27, 2020 by Jason Pombo

Cam Newton is impressing the coaching staff early on
Image: AP

After Cam Newton agreed to sign with the Patriots on June 28th, many people pegged Newton as the clear heir to the quarterback throne in New England. Prior to the signing of Cam Newton it seemed like the Patriots were going to roll with the young Jarrett Stidham, or journeyman Brian Hoyer. Even after the Patriots inked Cam Newton, Belichick refused to name a starter. Belichick wanted to see how training camp played out before he made any decisions. There were too many question marks heading into camp about all three quarterbacks. Would Cam Newton show up to camp healthy? Would Jarrett Stidham make a leap from year one to year two? Would Brian Hoyer take hold of the job solely based on his knowledge of the Patriots’ system and familiarity with the offense?

Newton may have the highest pedigree and most accolades coming into the Patriots’ quarterback room, but Bill Belichick could care less about stats and prior history when it comes to evaluating players. Belichick is going to give the starting nod to whichever quarterback gives the Patriots the best chance to win. Whether that was Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, or even Brian Hoyer, Belichick would make that call.

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#9 8/26

August 26, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

The Patriots were back in shells and shorts this morning, following two padded sessions to begin the week. I present today’s Tweets of Note, along with my thoughts.

Patriots WRs through nine practices

Gunner: 20 receptions
Edelman: 19 receptions
Byrd: 19 receptions
Sanu: 17 receptions
Ross: 11 receptions
Harry: 10 receptions
Meyers: 7 receptions
Zuber: 6 receptions

— Mark Daniels (@ByMarkDaniels) August 26, 2020

This caught my eye, if you asked me who’d have topped total receptions through nine practices, I wouldn’t have said Gunner Olszewski. A really great camp for him so far, along with Bird, and Harry who’s come on well this week.

(no title)

The general sense I get is that the Patriots’ big-money movement in free agency is over. The next significant domino to fall is right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, and until that situation is resolved, my feeling is that the Patriots wouldn’t want to commit significant salary cap space elsewhere if it meant closing the door on […]
