The Patriots were in their defensive sub packages 67 percent of the snaps last season, which reflects in part how the game has become more spread out offensively. Because of that, some now view a fifth defensive back as more of a valuable starter than a third linebacker. But through four games this season, the numbers are way down; the Patriots have been in sub defense 53 percent of the time and base/heavy personnel 47 percent. Are we seeing a correction of sorts? Or is it too small of a sample size? Something I’m interested to chart in the weeks to come.
