The way the Patriots are playing right now, using shotgun empty with five targets spread wide across the field to jump on opponents early, the only way to slow them down is to play press man and hope to disrupt their timing with three cornerbacks and two safety/linebacker types, and getting home with a four-man rush. But how many teams can actually do that? Not many. The Broncos, Jets and Packers come to mind. Certainly not the Jaguars, the Pats’ opponent on Sunday.

Pressure Scheme: Blitzing With Rush Lane Integrity – Inside The Pylon

Really good read breaking down the nuance of pass rush and how it works in conjunction with coverage. It’s complex rushes like this that the Patriots can manufacture this year with so many athletes in the front seven.

From the second quarter to the game’s end, the Pats used at least three defensive ends together on 28 of 53 snaps, which constitutes more than half of their plays. And on 14 of those snaps, the Pats went with four defensive ends.

I think they’ve got two pretty athletic guards. Young guys that have stepped in and they understand the offense,” Light said. “I don’t think they’re trying to make things too difficult offensively right now. The protections are pretty basic. But these guys are picking things up in a big way and they have that athleticism. In the running game, you’re seeing some of these guys come off the ball. You’re seeing some of these guards pull. They’re flexible and they’re able to move. The tackles, Sebastian and Nate, they’re going to do a great job. Those guys are really kind of the glue that holds that whole group together.

“You’re always nervous to get called on, because you don’t know what question is going to be asked,” he said. “He could be asking about the owner. To think about knowing the owner is difficult, to know his background.

"It’s definitely something new. You don’t want to mess up a guy’s name and any time you’re taking a test, I think there’s a little bit of nervousness there, but I think everybody in the room is pretty confident. We do a good job studying over here.”

The PatsPropaganda Football Podcast: 9/23

Recorded a new pod last night, with a special guest cricket in the studio chirping away like a little jerk. Hopefully you can’t hear him, but he certainly threw me off from remembering the name of my favorite show, NFL Turning Point. But lots of fun talk about the first two games and a couple things I’m a bit concerned about. It’s a half hour of me blabbing Pats, enjoy!

The Lions and Suh and Megatron, Oh My!

In the brief few days since the Patriots held on to beat the Colts you probably haven’t heard much about the Detroit Lions. If you’re a regular reader here you definitely haven’t. In fact there’s probably only one thing you heard if anything at all: Before we get to the Lions let’s talk a little […]
