Stephen Gostkowski’s was placed on season ending IR today, and thus ends a fairly unspectacular season which started rough but did see him kick his first ever game winning overtime Field Goal.

Shayne Graham steps in to replace him. I find it hard to get all bent out of shape about losing a kicker. I know Ghost was a pro bowler and everything, but until Shayne Graham misses a big kick I’m having a hard time really feeling torn up about it.

Just another stud we’ll get back in 2011…

The Steeler Sign That Gave Birth to a Patriots Blogger

November 10, 2010 by Mike Dussault

It was 2007, the Patriots were in the midst of a perfect regular season and I had yet to see them. The WGA writers strike had crippled my real job, leaving me with a 25% pay cut and only half days to work. So I took off to hit what looked on paper like the last major roadblock between my beloved New England Patriots and 16-0.

As we tailgated in grey, slushy conditions near Gillette Stadium a plane overhead was pulling a sign that instantly caught the attention of every man, woman and hoodie outside (and I assume inside) the stadium. I took out my camera and clicked a picture:

Ah yes, a friendly Spygate reference. The catalyst for the 2007 Pats to lay waste to everyone they faced. An incredible and historic season that saw the Pats come within 3 minutes of being the undisputed best team of all time.

As I waited in line for a port-a-potty, a Steeler fan who had made the trip shook his head. He seemed to know that flying such a sign would pretty much ensure the Patriots would come out pissed off and ready to play.

And guess what? He was right.

I returned home after the game and, while scanning craigslist for a job that might get some more income coming in, I spotted an ad looking for bloggers to blog about their favorite sports teams.

Hmmm. I was a writer. I loved the Patriots. And I could even make one to two cents per day! I was sold. So for my first post I grabbed the picture I had clicked of the sign that had been flown over the stadium.

Thus began my blogging career  and I have to say I owe at least part of it to the anonymous Steeler fan who felt compelled to poke the Patriots in the eye just before the game.

Here is a link to that first ever blog post.

Alright, let’s kick off Steelers week with this little play from 2007, which is arguably the greatest touchdown of the epic 2007 season. The fact that it just happened to be over that Steeler safety (purposely not mentioning his real name since I don’t remember it and don’t care enough to go look it up because he’s a jerkhole) who had predicted victory for the Squealers, was just the icing on the cake.

I should also point out that I was at this game and it was a certain pregame incident (more to come on that later) that inspired me to begin blogging, which has of course resulted in me making literally tens of dollars.

I was actually in the very last row of Gillette for this one, overdressed so I was comfortably warm (and numb I might add, thanks Kevin!), as a drunk girl next to us somehow peed on the upper wall of the stadium (don’t ask cause I don’t know). But from way up there it was amazing to watch this play develop.

I actually expect similar type misdirection and trickeration this weekend. The Steelers have an attacking defense and if you can fool them and get them out of position, you could be looking at a big play.

Let’s all remember this hit from Ryan Clarke the last time the Patriots and Steelers met up. This hit might actually be a $1 million fine these days.

The new Football Outsiders DVOA rankings are out, and the trends for the Patriots don’t look too hot.

Offensively the Pats have been pretty much in a steady decline since the first game of the season. Despite this the Patriots still have the best offensive DVOA in all of football.

Defensively (where I’ve flipped the ratings to negative to make the chart a little easier to analyze) the Pats are starting to regress again the last two weeks after decent improvement since the Jets game.

On Special Teams the trend of the last three games of marginally poor performances continued.

It’s not getting any easier for the Patriots with the Steelers on deck and the Colts in the hole. Reversing the current trends will no be small task. Graphically, this looks like a team headed in the wrong direction and that’s disturbing.

Found this video today of linebacker drills from training camp 2010, or more specifically INSIDE linebacker drills. Thought it was kind of interesting. As you can see they’re working on gaining leverage based on where the play is going. There’s a notable “Good Job, Dane” shouted by Matt Patricia at one point.

On a related note I’m happy to see Tyrone McKenzie catch on with Tampa Bay. Even to my slowly-being-trained eyes Fletcher looked like the better fit for New England defense than Tyrone. He was quicker to react and has better length which is more conducive to taking on blockers, and then shedding them without allowing them to get into you.

mike, why no love for lg blount? a young guy who was undrafted, had a 1000 yard season, then made expendable, and now fighting for a roster spot. should make a great complement to the riddler and the wolvereen. even more so with the beaten up te’s and the untested wr’s

Barring injuries, I just don’t see it with Blount. Many want to pencil him into the short yardage role over Bolden, but he’s never been a decisive runner like that. If Bolden can return to his early season form from last year I think he’s a slam dunk.  Add in all the off-the-field stuff that’s […]
