Wilfork on Patriots D: ‘From Terrible To Pretty Good’

Yes, it’s a parade of “The Pats D is improving” articles today! We’re reaping the benefit of the defensive performance Cowboys game. Thank Hoodie for that, because I would’ve had to go into a media cocoon if it was going to be two weeks of “Where’s the pass rush” commentary. Here’s a sampling from Wilfork:

We’ve seen things go from terrible to pretty good,” said Wilfork. “Not great. We’re definitely not where we want to be, but at the same time we’re working towards it.”

“The past two weeks you’ve seen us, we have gotten better in certain areas and we’re going to continue to do that,” said the Patriots defensive captain. “Because Bill’s going to put the pressure us and we’re going to have to execute. If we execute our game plan and stop giving up mental mistakes and big plays we’ll be alright. I think the guys know that.”

Part of his success can be attributed to his versatility, instincts and awareness. As a cover corner with size, strength and athleticism, Arrington is capable of playing in the slot or outside in the Pats’ sub package. He excels at jamming receivers early in their routes, which disrupts the timing of the passing game and produces errant throws from the quarterback. His aggressiveness challenges receivers to make tough grabs under duress, and the persistent contact leads to tips or deflections in the back end.

I thought the win against Dallas was a good, tough win for our football team that in all honesty, we haven’t had a lot of those lately. This was one of those games where we had to get the ball back. We did. We needed a long drive to get into field-goal range. We did, and then we were able to finish the drive and get in the end zone. The players stepped up. They made it when they had to, and you have to feel good about that, in spite of some of the other mistakes we made that day.

“Now, they just erased that off their team,” Jenkins said on ESPN radio regarding the leadership provided by himself, Shaun Ellis and Damien Woody. “Now you have guys that, yeah, they’re good, they can play their positions, but they don’t have the experience to take on those responsibilities, so what happens? You get a catty locker room.”

“They’re not trying to put the hard work in to become a leader inside-out,” he said. “They just want it on the outside and for everyone to see them for how special they are. The thing I had a personal issue with when I was there was guys trying to copyright things and be known for what they’re saying and this show and that show.”
