The Patriots won 13 games this season, which meant that they awarded practice player of the week honors 13 different times. The practice player of the week is awarded to those who the coaching staff feels best prepared the Patriots in the days leading up to a victory. Practice players of the week wear a black jersey on those weeks in recognition of their work. Rookie Markell Carter, the sixth-round draft choice from Central Arkansas, earned the highest total of black jerseys this season (7).

This is a very good sign for next year. We all knew Carter would need some time to develop after coming out of a small college, but all reports about how he’s done this year have been positive. He’s also added some weight.
Now the question becomes where does he fit on defense? Is he an OLB hybrid type? Or could he play 4-3 defensive end like Andre Carter where it would be necessary to be extremely stout at the point of attack. These are questions to weigh in the off-season, but Carter should be an interesting player to watch in camp this summer.

Chemistry is an underrated and underdiscussed championship factor because it can’t be measured with statistics. I think anyone who has played sports at some point in their life can attest to the power of a team where everyone gets along and is pulling in the same direction.
When you look at this Patriots team they’ve had major comeback wins, they’ve won in hostile environments, and in hyped national games. Perhaps more importantly they’ve had their backs against the wall numerous times. It might not always be pretty but this is a team of fighters and it will take a near-perfect game for someone to end their season in Foxboro.

Preach brother Jerry, preach!
Evidence is mounting that the Patriots found a pretty solid player with the 73rd overall pick in last year’s draft. Ridley’s 5.1 yards per rush is 10th among the 56 running backs with at least 85 rushes. Ridley has been among the league’s most powerful runners, averaging 2.6 yards after contact per rush. That trails only Ben Tate, Isaac Redman and Donald Brown among running backs with at least 85 carries. However, Ridley was far more than just a niche power rusher, averaging a 20 yard run once every 17.4 carries. That was the seventh-best average among backs with at least 85 carries

Consider that the four teams that have allowed the most passing yards this season are the Packers, Patriots, New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, four division champions with a combined 50-14 record. Removing the blowout situations paints a clearer picture of the defense, an opportunistic unit that is willing to surrender yards (8.2 yards per attempt in 10-point games or less, 29th in NFL) in exchange for preventing the big play. Additionally, the Patriots defense has made some big plays of its own, tying for second in interceptions (23) and first in red-zone interceptions (six).
