Brady is outstanding in so many areas, but what really stands out is his total command in the pocket. Few quarterbacks in NFL history move within the pocket better than Tom Brady. Pocket movement is an essential attribute to play NFL quarterback at a consistently-high level. Think of it this way: the ability to move within an area no larger than the approximate size of a boxing ring. Sometimes it’s a strain, just a step here or a step there. Other times, it’s more pronounced. The corollary, and it’s equally as important, you must maintain your downfield focus while you’re moving. You cannot look at the rush. It’s a far more important trait than running out of the pocket. "I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more comfortable pocket quarterback than Brady. There have been times over the years he’s literally been a statue in the pocket — static, stationary, motionless. I can tell you from experience that’s a rare trait. Everything is happening very fast. The ability to slow down your body like that, that’s remarkable.

The deadline for the Patriots and franchise player Wes Welker to get a longer-term deal done is next Monday at 4 p.m., and after a time when it looked like a longshot something might get done, now things are starting to look up. While the two sides have been in different places as far as guaranteed money, it is believed that the main hurdle is a third year and how to structure it. The Patriots have been reluctant to go to a three-year deal with the 31-year old receiver, who in five seasons with New England has recorded 554 catches, just three shy of the franchise record set by Troy Brown over 15 years. Via a league source, it is expected that the two sides will be working hard this week toward getting a deal done.

BostonHerald.com – Blogs: The Blitz» Blog Archive » Kyle Love could be poised for even bigger season in 2012

Defensive tackle Kyle Love surpassed expectations as much as anyone on the defense last season. He was a force alongside Wilfork, and Love’s ability to consistently push through the middle gave the coaches enough comfort to swing Wilfork to the outside in certain situations. Love was good from start to finish last season, which was noteworthy because he wasn’t affected by the lockout like other second-year defensive players. So, with a full offseason, it’s worth wondering how much better he can be this year. Lastly, due to Love’s position, he won’t accumulate the stats to make him a household name, but he’s got a chance get even better in 2012.

You’re talking about a distance in the range of around $6 million in guaranteed money. That’s not to say the sides can’t agree. The Patriots could very well give in a little bit at the end. Essentially what they will be asking themselves is this: What kind of year do we think Welker will have? If the Patriots feel he will repeat his terrific production of a year ago or close to it, then right now they need to figure out what they would do after this season. Welker led the league, by a wide margin, with 122 receptions, and was second to Calvin Johnson of the Lions with 1,569 yards. If Welker, 31, comes close to that in 2012, are the Patriots prepared to let him walk, perhaps to a team like the Jets, and go forward with some assortment of Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Jabar Gaffney, and Donte’ Stallworth? If they are, then let Welker play out the tag and bid him adieu. He’s not going to sign a team-friendly deal after another standout season.

Time running out for Welker/Pats to come to a long term agreement. As much as I enjoy watching Wes play and think he deserves a great deal, you can’t fault the Pats for playing it safe with him. We all know how much Welker gets lit up, and who knows how long he’ll be able to continue to bounce up after every vicious hit he takes.

An on the Jets, of course none of us want to see him go there but is it really like Welker is the missing piece for them? It would be just another classic “let’s bring in a high priced free agent and totally retard Jeremy Kerley’s development” move. I would’ve been more worried about them getting Logan Mankins.

Wes Welker needs four catches in the season opener to become the Patriots’ all-time leader in receptions. Troy Brown’s 557 catches is currently the top mark, a total that took 15 seasons to accumulate (1993-2007). Welker enters his sixth season with the Patriots in 2012, making the imminent accomplishment that much more impressive.
