Patriots offense in for a challenge vs. 49ers – Sports – The Boston Globe

Great stuff in here about how good the 49ers are. Should be an awesome challenge for the Patriots tonight, one that will tell us a lot about them.

“The Niners have yet, really, to be put in a position where they are forced to play catch-up or stay paced with a high-powered offense,” the executive said. “If that happens and the Patriots have the ability to create distance on the scoreboard, you’re going to see the Niners get put into a foreign territory on offense where they have to hurry up and get back into the game. I don’t know how they’d react.

The Patriots have forced 27 fumbles this season, which not only leads the league but is already the third-most in the 19 seasons that they’ve tracked the stat. Only the 2010 Giants (30) and the 1999 Eagles (28) had more forced fumbles. And there are still three games to go.

There is a book of tricks, a book of calls, that an inside linebacker can use in that system,” Bruschi explained on the weekly ESPNBoston.com podcast. “Jerod knows all those calls and he’s starting to use his arsenal of calls, and utilize other players, other pieces on his chessboard, to put them in position so he can make plays.” On offense, Brady is a master chess player. Mayo is coming into his own as well. “It’s kind of like a quarterback: The linebacker has to make multiple, multiple decisions on every play,” coach Bill Belichick said. “So many different things happen in a split second during the course of the play, just like it is for a quarterback.

Great read on Mayo that echoes a lot of that I wrote about earlier this week. It’s clear, people are taking notice of Jerod Mayo this year.

In describing the 49ers on Wednesday, Bill Belichick begin his assessment like this: “They’re a very physical football team.” Indeed, this might be the most physical team in football, and the Patriots must match that physicality. The 49ers’ offensive line is full of strong-bodied players, and they love to set the tempo in the running game. The 49ers have made strong offenses look vulnerable with their physicality, and the Patriots must be ready to handle that style of play and equalize it.

I only have the energy for one take today because The Oldest Huckster in Boston threw out a doozy of a tweet. Hot Take: Roethlisberger has surgery today.
