What went right and wrong last time vs. Phins via ESPNBoston.com

What went right and wrong last time vs. Phins via ESPNBoston.com

What went right: The defense played solid throughout the afternoon, and forced a turnover on a strip sack of rookie Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehiil. It also yielded just 277 yards of total offense to Miami on the day. The offense came up with a 7-minute, 18-second drive late in the fourth quarter to set up a field goal from Stephen Gostkowski that put the team up by 10 and the game largely out of reach. Wes Welker led the way with 12 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. On special teams, wide receiver Matthew Slater stood out and earned praise from head coach Bill Belichick.

What didn’t: The Patriots had their quietest day offensively in 2012, racking up “just” 321 yards of total offense. The running game struggled for much of the day, but came together on the final drive of the game. Receiver Brandon Lloyd was targeted just once in the game, and the offensive line yielded four sacks of Brady. Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer had some struggles against defensive end Cameron Wake. Gostskowski missed a field goal.

Speaking realistically, what do you think the chances of us getting a Bye week is?

December 24, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Well I certainly like having two chances at it. If either the Broncos (vs. Chiefs) or Texans (@ Colts) lose the Pats have the wild card weekend off.

Two interesting games with the Colts and Texans both already in the playoffs and maybe looking to rest some guys. But the Texans really need to pull out the win or risk falling to the third seed. It’s a delicate balance for them. I say they should play everyone this weekend to make sure everyone gets a rest next weekend.

But the Colts should play them hard.

I’m holding out hope that Pioli and Crennel can send us one last gift from Kansas City, and I’m sure Crennel will come up with some defensive looks to challenge Peyton. Still it might be a long shot.

I’d realistically put the Pats odds at 25%.

Snaps: 8 is enough for Talib – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Snaps: 8 is enough for Talib – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Rookie lineman Justin Francis played a season-high 47 snaps as he’s really coming on. He drew a holding penalty in run support, but also looked to be the 11th player who didn’t come on to the field on the one play the Patriots had just 10 on the field. … On the interior of the defensive line, Brandon Deaderick is making his mark in recent weeks. He’s played 141 snaps over the last three games. In the first 12 games of the season, he played 197. His rise has trimmed back Kyle Love’s playing time.

Picked-up pieces after first-half review – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Picked-up pieces after first-half review – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

The Patriots appeared to play a decent amount of man coverage with various forms of safety help over the top. Man coverage sometimes means a defense is daring an opposing quarterback to beat it by making throws into tight windows, which Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne did. Of note, Jacksonville worked the middle of the field with horizontal crossing patterns, which work well against man coverage to create natural picks and confusion in the secondary. On one such crossing route, Cecil Shorts III took in a pass for a first down, and linebacker Dont’a Hightower appeared to pull up before the play was over. That was an odd lapse in effort. One more component to man coverage defense: It often allows an offense to single up on its blocking schemes, which is exactly what happened on a couple of chunk runs. The Jaguars were able to put a hat-on-a-hat and create space for Montell Owens. Overall, the drive was about Jacksonville executing in a deliberate manner – there wasn’t a big play, coverage bust, or costly penalty. It was just good offensive football, which has been a rarity for the Jaguars this season, and not very good defense from the Patriots.

The Patriots Defense is Pretty Damn Good After All

The Patriots won their sixth straight game on Sunday in Mexico City, improving to 8-2 thanks to a complete domination of the Raiders. While the offense has been putting up gaudy numbers of late, and really for the entire season, more attention needs to be paid to the marked shift in the Patriots defensive effort […]
