As Patriots players were wrapping up their work day Friday, one final meeting was called. It was with the kickoff coverage unit. The Patriots struggled in that area against the Texans last Sunday, and today, they face the NFL’s No. 1 ranked unit led by Jacoby Jones. The best explanation for the struggles last week was this: 1) Too many players were getting single-blocked. The message was that players had to do better getting off blocks; 2) The Texans favored a “middle return” and coverage players didn’t play with good enough leverage against the wedge. That’s an area that naturally received a lot of attention this week.

the Patriots only had 34 carries for 77 yards against the Ravens last time they played in Week 3. Since that game, New England has averaged 141 yards rushing. New England led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 27 and is especially dangerous in the red zone.

I think the Ravens don’t play in awe of Brady. A lot of teams will not blitz the Patriots, because Brady is so good pre-snap and recognizing blitz. It becomes an irrelevant thing, because you’re sacrificing a body that never gets there, and then, Brady eats you up. When these teams played in Week 3, Brady was 12 of 15 for 155 yards against the blitz. But that game came down the final minutes. The Patriots are ahead, 30-28, and they have the ball just across the 50-yard line. If they get a first down, the game is probably over, and it’s second down. The Ravens blitz, they get someone in clean because a mistake was made, and they sack Brady. The next play, third-and-16, and who blitzes on third-and-16 when they still need 20 yards to get in field goal range? They blitz again, and Brady’s able to duck under it this time, but he throws it away because the whole timing broke down. In critical situations, the Ravens have shown that they’re willing to blitz, and they’ve gotten there at times.

Unlike Cameron, Caldwell’s play-calling has seen the Ravens attack the middle of the field more with combination routes, such as double posts, smash (hitch corner route), Y-sail and pivot-dig. Cameron had a preference for isolated routes on the outsides, which didn’t benefit quarterback Joe Flacco. Since the firing of Cameron, Flacco’s improved as a passer and appears to have more control over the offense.
