This is not a case of the Patriots being one or two players away from a Super Bowl title, so it would be an upset if the Patriots get in early at the luxury level like they did in 2007 with linebacker Adalius Thomas. The Patriots have significant voids on the depth chart to fill — 14 by my subjective count — so it likely will be more prudent for them to cast a wide free agent net.

Several sources believed the Patriots would make a run at Cruz, but that was prior to Cruz changing agents recently and going with Tom Condon, who the Pats generally don’t do business with. While in the past, in general, restricted free agent activity has been limited, some teams are aggressive and looking to make moves to add to the offense, and there are no shortage of teams with abundant cap space.

According to multiple sources, the Patriots would like to get cornerback Aqib Talib done soon. This makes sense for a few reasons: a) the Patriots don’t have any real cornerbacks beyond Alfonso Dennard; b) the Patriots gave up a fourth-round pick for Talib so if he walks, it would look pretty bad; c) with a flooded market at cornerback, the Patriots are probably playing the, “You should take our deal because once you get out there, your price is only going to do down.”;
