What this eventually boils down to is the innate fear of change that fans have with regard to their team’s stars. Most people are loath to give up on something good until it’s been proven that a once-productive player can no longer perform at the same level. That’s understandable, but it’s a terrible way to run a football team. Belichick knows that, and he’s spent 13 years moving on from players at exactly the right time.

2013 NFL free agency — New England Patriots quickly shifted from Wes Welker to Danny Amendola – ESPN Boston

2013 NFL free agency — New England Patriots quickly shifted from Wes Welker to Danny Amendola – ESPN Boston

Good breakdown from Reiss on how it all went down…

The team’s offer, a two-year, $10 million pact with incentives that could have pushed it as high as $16 million but in the eyes of Welker would be extremely difficult to reach, wasn’t accepted. At that point, Welker and his representatives intensified their pursuit of other offers, and it helped that some groundwork had previously been laid with the Broncos. Likewise, the Patriots turned their attention to Amendola, who was their top choice if things didn’t work out with Welker (and in the eyes of some on the other side of the negotiating table their top choice all along).

The Patriots parted ways with Welker because they feel a slightly new direction for the offense is needed to win another Super Bowl. It’s definitely a road with more risk. The easiest thing in the world would have been to bring the ever-reliable Welker back and continue with the same offense, only with a better, younger and more explosive replacement for Brandon Lloyd as the boundary receiver. But sometimes you have to risk something to gain something. I think that’s what the Patriots believe. I don’t know this, but it’s been there on film all season. It was only reinforced with the loss to the Ravens in the AFC Championship. And I’m on board with it. Have been for a while.

I’m on board too.

It’s tempting to wonder if the balance of power in the AFC just shifted these past two days. Super Bowl champion Baltimore suffered multiple early losses in free agency, and now New England must deal with a major defection to its pace-setting offense. Both the Ravens and Patriots beat the Broncos last season, so the gap looks considerably narrowed from this vantage point.
