Give Vollmer a lot of credit. Facing free agency for the first time, he could have rested longer — or even elected season-ending surgery — after getting the Week 12 Jets game off. Vollmer to that point had allowed one sack and 14 quarterback pressures in 10 games. In the seven games after the injury, Vollmer allowed 5.5 sacks and 23 total pressures. Vollmer sacrificed money for the team. Hope the Patriots remember that when it comes to Vollmer’s playing time incentives.

Jenkins might not even make the roster coming out of training camp, but that doesn’t mean he won’t help at some point during the 2013 season, similar to how it unfolded with Donte’ Stallworth in 2012 (signed in an emergency situation and then delivered a long touchdown reception versus the Texans on Dec. 10). It’s tough for that to happen without developing some type of foundation in the offseason/training camp.

After drafting terribly from 2006-09, the Patriots have done much better in their last three drafts and are close to becoming a draft-and-develop team. That’s part of the reason they haven’t gone nuts in free agency this year. The Patriots will still have a few more moves up their sleeves (veteran pass rusher, receivers, maybe a cornerback), but fans should be buoyed that the coaches feel good about the current roster. Sure, there is some work to do at receiver, but the line, tight ends, and running backs are all back on offense. On the defensive side of the ball, they have finally brought back all of the starters and most of the key reserves from the previous season. Continuity. That’s how you build a champion — if the Patriots are judging their roster correctly.

Adding him, the veteran leadership, the presence, the respect factor, he’s a guy that’s a terrific blitzer, and a physical presence,” said Harrison, now an NFL analyst for NBC. “I think he can come in especially during nickel and dime situations, and come down (close to the line) and play that second linebacker position like I did. He’s physical enough to help out in the run game, but he can also cover tight ends. So he can be that guy next to (Jerod) Mayo who can come in and really make a difference in that nickel and dime package. . . . It’s a fantastic move. I think he’ll help the Patriots immediately. I think he’ll hold people accountable.

Pats Posits: Sticking With the Posit(ives) in a Flat Preseason Loss

The Patriots’ 25-14 loss at the hands of the Carolina Panthers in Week Three of the preseason left plenty to feel blah about. The offense sputtered for most of the night. The defense looked far more like the pressureless bend-don’t-break that Patriots fans hoped went with Matt Patricia to Detroit rather than the attacking new […]
