Mike, you’ve got the opportunity to bring back just one of Lloyd/Edelman to add some internal experience to the receiver position next fall. Who do you pick, and why?

April 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’m really kind of surprised that neither has been brought back already. Especially Edelman. And it seemed initially like they’d try to bring Lloyd back at a reduced rate.

But if I had to pick one it would be Edelman. We know what he brings on special teams, and is a top punt returner. As a receiver it seemed like he was really starting to blossom before the injuries. You can ignore the injuries with him, but when you’ve had such limited success developing receivers it seems to me like it should be a no-brainer to keep working with Edelman.

My guess is that he wanted to see what else is out there, maybe if anyone would potentially give him starter money, which it doesn’t look like they will. If it’s a tie between the Pats and Giants, I’d guess he’d pick the Pats.

As for Lloyd, it was a ballsy move to let him go when they had no other legit returning receiver under contract. But if the stories about everyone kind of being fed up with his up-and-down attitude then I get it. There’s a reason he hasn’t been able to stick anywhere and is still on the market despite putting up a respectable year last year.

Ultimately I’d rather see a rookie get a shot at the X receiver spot. Lloyd would never have the physicality or RAC ability the Pats want, and to keep him around would’ve been somewhat of a desperation move and we know the Pats don’t play like that.

2005 AFC Divisional playoff New England Patriots at Denver Broncos complete game (by dipsomaniac1976)

A little Friday Patriots viewing if you’re feeling up for the original Tom Brady/Bill Belichick playoff loss. In many ways I think this game was one of the initial sparks for this blog. It was after this loss that I realized Brady/Belichick only had a finite number of shots at another Lombardi. Winning Super Bowls brings people on the bandwagon, but losing when you know you have all the pieces to win brings out the obsession.

Hard to say the 2005 Patriots deserved to win a Super Bowl though. Along with 2009 and 2002, it made up the holy triumvirate of shitty Patriots seasons. Still think 2009 takes the cake, but 2005 was just a sloppy mess from the moment Chad Brown and Monty Beisel were our starting inside linebackers.

Kiper tabs Hunter, Mathieu in mock – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Kiper tabs Hunter, Mathieu in mock – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

I’m on board with Hunter, but I think Mathieu would be a fascinating strategic choice that I’m not sure I agree with. No doubt he’s a electric player, but after seeing the trouble Patrick Chung had holding up inside in the NFL, I’m concerned about the wiry Mathieu.

But from a defensive package standpoint how would the Pats employ Mathieu? They just locked Kyle Arrington in on a four-year deal, and it’s apparent his best fit is in the slot, though he is serviceable and experienced on the outside.

So you’re looking at Mathieu competing with Arrington, but more likely to take a dime slot role. Is that worth a second-round pick? I’m not so sure. And even if he supplants Arrington, that sure doesn’t make his long-term contract look like a good one.

I like Mathieu as a player, I just don’t think I see real value in him for the Pats unless they got him in the 4th round.

We have seen countless times the issues the Patriots cause defenses with Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski on the field together. As good as Gronkowski is, it’s Hernandez that poses the more dangerous threat. Why? Because he, like Gates, can win one-on-one versus corners, especially nickel corners. That’s where the problem arises. You match up to defend the pass, and you still face mismatches in man-to-man coverage. And we haven’t even factored in the running game, which the Patriots consistently utilized effectively with Stevan Ridley to hurt nickel defenses.
