One of the things thst stands out about Dobson is that he fits a different profile than most of the other receivers on the roster. He’s more of a pure outside target (good size, long arms) who has shown a knack for making the tough catch, although he doesn’t have top-end speed. The Pro Football Weekly draft preview calls him a “big, fluid, quicker-than-fast, short to intermediate flanker who projects best as a complementary No. 3 receiver.” The draft preview notes that he ran a limited route tree, which will be one area to monitor as he makes the transition to a complex Patriots system.

He has major athletic ability,” said one scout of Collins’ LB-leading vertical jump (41½) and broad jump (11-7). “Tested off the charts. He played walkaway outside backer and as a defensive end. He can be a ‘will’ in a 4-3, a ‘will’ in a 3-4 or a 3-4 rush backer. But he’s not very smart (Wonderlic of 17).” Played far better as a junior than for a winless team in ’12. “He dogged it this year,” another scout said. “He hated the staff, and probably was right in doing so. Need to watch junior tape. He’s very athletic but not physical. Hit or miss, feast or famine.

Our instant analysis pick is up at Bleacher Report. He was off our radar but who doesn’t like adding athletic pass rushing freaks to our defense even if he is a little raw.
I think the Patriots are gambling on the fact that their draft board was obviously so closely stacked in dealing down 23 picks with Minnesota. New England wasn’t slated to pick until the 29th overall spot in round one; now the Patriots will be on the clock at number 22 in the second round tonight. The Patriots, as it turns out, are slated to have zero picks in the top 51, then five in the next 51, with (overall), the 52nd, 59th, 83rd, 91st, and 102nd choices.
