Tom Brady, New England Patriots experience early growing pains with wide receiver redo – ESPN Boston

Nice piece from Reiss, and yes, it’s to be expected that they’ll look sloppy now. The true test will be once training camp starts, and even then, what we see in the preseason will likely have little bearing on how they look once the bullets are real.

It’s a fascinating area to watch, and one of the most interesting turns of Brady’s career, one that will likely play a huge part in defining his final act.

In the glory days, the patriots had 2 of the nastiest/dirtiest defenders with Seymour and Harrison. What guys on this years team have that intimidation factor, that swag?

Spikes for sure, think Hightower can develop it as well. Adrian Wilson should bring something to the party this year as well. There’s a fine line between having intimidators, and just having idiots who launch at people (cough Meriweather).

I do think in general the Patriots have a pretty physical defense, albeit not one that is scary. Wilfork especially is a dominant player in the trenches, and Tommy Kelly should make for a good combo with him this year.

Friday Patriots Q&A is a GOOOOO!

C’mon Pats planet, you never disappoint with great questions, let’s hear them this week. We’ll take any and everything… historical questions, questions about the blog, personal Pats experiences, whatevs. You ask it. I’ll answer it.

And my question for you:

Who is the returning veteran you think will make a big jump this year? And you can’t say Ras-I Dowling, just because.

We’ve played a mixture of odd fronts and even fronts, but I just felt like from a starting point—given the lack of spring opportunities to practice and meet, and the shortened training camp in terms of actual number of practices—that from a teaching standpoint we felt like there would be more carryover teaching our base defense and nickel defense really as one front. …we felt like in trying to evaluate young players, asking them to learn one system in a 3-4 and then learn another system in nickel [was too much]. As you know, we were in nickel defense just as much as we were 3-4 defense because of teams using multiple receivers on early downs and two-minute and all those kind of things. …There are so many intricacies to a 3-4 defense that I just didn’t know if we’d be ready to handle them this year. Probably wouldn’t have been, to be honest with you.
