It’s a significant concern, but the Patriots won games before those tight ends got there,” an AFC personnel executive said. “If Amendola stays healthy, it could be an even exchange with Welker there, and outside receivers have come and gone and it hasn’t affected the quarterback. The key element is Gronk. You get him back in Week 1, you have that presence in the middle of the field for the quarterback. That’s a considerable factor. "But what made the Patriots so hard to defend is they had two players in the middle that were huge matchup problems at tight end, and no one had the components on defense to deal with both of them at once. You just didn’t find defenses with the resources to deal with both of them. They only have one now.

This is why back-to-back division games on a short week to start the season is a little disconcerting for me. If the Pats go 2-0 in the division before the season is a week old, the rest of AFC East can pretty much pack it in.

Are the Patriots more vulnerable than ever? – CBSSports.com

Nothing tears up the internet faster than an article like this one, and I know it grinds the gears of a lot of Pats fans, but in truth it is now or never (at least until BB/TFB are gone) for the rest of the AFC East.

If the Pats offense still is dominant with an almost-entirely new roster of young weapons, they’re going to be dominant for at least a few more seasons, until Brady starts to fade. So the AFC East better pray every single new receiver the Pats brought in doesn’t work out.

What does bother me about these articles is the lack of mention of the defense. Probably shouldn’t be too surprising given they’ve been average at best the last few years. But it’s important to note that all starters outside Kyle Love return, and the additions of Adrian Wilson and Tommy Kelly should help two big weak spots. The defense’s trajectory should continue upward, especially if Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower take significant steps as well.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins they don’t see the Pats until late-October and mid-December. By then they should likely have Gronk back and be finding a stride with their new receivers. It’s all on the Bills and Jets to  take advantage of New England’s inexperience with their receiver corps early in the season to set up a real race for the AFC East down the stretch.

Patriots game tickets on sale July 16 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Patriots game tickets on sale July 16 – Extra Points – Boston.com

And here we go again, another year where fans are tempted with game tickets that will be cleaned out by all the bots within minutes.

Last year I wrote about the impossible dream that is face-value tickets, and yet again nothing has changed this year. I look forward to hearing from everyone who dances the “I have a chance at tickets” dance next week and comes up empty.

If NFL teams were serious about improving the stadium experience, it starts with giving real fans real access to tickets. Now, any tickets average fans can get will be marked up, only to be compounded by parking costs, overpriced food and drinks, and likely being so far from the field it’s like watching all-22 film.

Quick-hit thoughts on NFL, Pats – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Quick-hit thoughts on NFL, Pats – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

It’s really been like trying to get water out of a rock the last couple weeks for Patriots news, especially since we’ve been ignoring the Hernando sitch for the most part. But now as we cross the 4th of July we begin the final countdown to training camp and real football news. Just two more weekends…

Here’s a tidbit we’ve been hitting on this offseason… how big a role will Brandon Bolden play this year?

A question we’ve asked ourselves before and look forward to finding an answer to is: What’s in store for second-year running back Brandon Bolden? The 2012 undrafted rookie was blossoming prior to a Week 6 injury last season, looking very much like a reliable between-the-tackles runner with good contact strength and burst. An injury coupled with a four-game suspension relegated Bolden to a special-teams role upon his return, but, based on ability alone, he has what it takes to resume an offensive job. Both he and Shane Vereen are among the running backs who may be called upon for bigger duties in 2013.

Patriots Devin McCourty wraps up dominating rookie year

Remember when Devin McCourty was billed as just a great special teams player (ala Matthew Slater)? Well praise hoodie that he proved to be an every down player in the pros as well. McCourty turned in a seven interception rookie year while playing every meaningful down of Patriots football. He was durable, he made tackles, […]
