Couple of questions: when does actual training camp start? Also do you think they’ll try to push Dobson into the starting job on the outside as soon as possible? And do you think Boyce will be thrown into a pretty prominent role early often? I don’t think they’ll role the dice on Jenkins considering he’s never been a vet productive receiver. And Jones may have potential but I don’t see the pats rolling the dice on him either

July 9, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Practices open on Friday, July 26th, though the players will be reporting before that for testing.

They won’t push Dobson, he’ll have to earn whatever he gets. He’ll make the team, but nothing will be handed to him. He needs to get and stay healthy first and foremost.

I don’t know if they’ll throw Boyce into a prominent role, but I have a feeling he could earn one. Getting a rookie Deion Branch feeling about him.

I left both Jenkins and Jones off my initial 53, and put three rookies on (Dobson/Boyce/Harrison). They have a good group to throw at the wall this summer. I always prefer a throw the rookies in the fire type approach, but the best two WRs will start regardless.

Just get ready, about a month from right now we’ll see an offense without an identity and everyone will panic as usual. Even if they’re sloppy into September, I think by the time November/December roll around they’ll be fine.

Since it’s such a slow period in the football calendar, I’m wondering if there’s anything we can discuss regarding 2014, such as draft picks, or better yet free agents. Do you see Patriots being interested in Hakeem Nicks?

July 9, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Well I’m a little bit in ramp-up mode for 2013 and while it’s hard to look past this new season, I’ll bite.

Of course any free agent they’d pursue next offseason would be a direct result of performance this year, but regardless I don’t see them pursuing any high price wide receivers. The hope is that a couple guys emerge this year and they can then grow in the system.

But here are some interesting guys due to hit free agency:

  • Brandon Spikes
  • Rob Ninkovich
  • Aqib Talib
  • Jermaine Cunningham
  • Ryan Wendell
  • Jake Ballard

Big spotlight on all these guys, so if you’re going to look at one focal position this season it’s gotta be defensive end, and that could be a spot they hit the free agency market for barring an in-season extension.

Personally I think Wendell is the most likely to get extended first, especially if he shows some pass protection improvement. He should be affordable.

Let me tell you about someone I do admire. Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots has contributed more to the work I surround myself with than any black athlete in modern times—financially, intellectually, every way. He’s been in the prisons with me. He’s met gang members in my home; he’s met gang members in Cleveland [where Belichick coached the Browns from 1991 to ‘95]. He’s put up money. He’s opened up areas of education for us very quietly and very strongly. Imagine what would happen if Michael Jordan did the same thing.

First preseason game is one month from today. Finally. Can’t wait to stop speculating and reviewing what has really been one of the worst offseasons of recent memory. Loved players departed, got surgery and let us all down.

Nothing like some hard hitting training camp action to put it all behind us and begin the 2013 campaign!

There were no full practice reports today but from the looks of this picture I’m going to go out on a limb and say “DEEP THREAT!”.
