It was, in many ways, reminiscent of the third preseason game in 2011 when the Patriots traveled to Detroit and were pummeled 34-10. They went on to win 13 regular-season games that year and play in the Super Bowl, which reminds us not to overreact to preseason results.

The Patriots didn’t let the Lions into the end zone after Bush’s long run. They held the Lions to a three-and-out after Brandon Bolden fumbled at his 19, and David Akers missed the chip-shot field goal. They did allow the easy touchdown to Scheffler — backup linebacker Dane Fletcher badly bit on the play-fake — but they again held the Lions to a three-and-out after a Shane Vereen fumble gave Detroit the ball on New England’s 7-yard line.

We kick off in two weeks and we have to play a helluva lot better than we played tonight,” Brady added. “That’s a good lesson for all of us I don’t care who you are, this is the NFL. It’s a very humbling game if you don’t bring it every single night, every week, you’ll get your butt kicked. There are great players on the other team. We have to do a lot better at all positions. Working on the dime package (six defensive backs) seemed to be a top priority for the Patriots, and we saw safety Adrian Wilson move down to a linebacker-type role in that grouping. He was involved in Reggie Bush’s 67-yard catch-and-run, taking a bad angle that helped spring Bush free, and didn’t seem to be entirely comfortable reading and reacting to what was unfolding in front of him. The Patriots started Devin McCourty and Steve Gregory at safety, which seems to be viewed as their best coverage-type players at the position. Wilson came on in the second half.
