Leon Washington Signs with Patriots

March 14, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots finally found a potential solution to their kickoff return game today by signing Leon Washington. Washington is coming off a year in Seattle where he didn’t see much time as a runningback but was the primary kick and punt returner. With Welker gone and Julian Edelman still TBD, Washington fills two holes immediately and provides some depth at runningback. Not sure what this means for Danny Woodhead and Jeff Demps.

I’m not at the fact that we let Welker walk i’m mad at the fact that we’re not signing anyone. Do you think this will change?

Of course it will. It’s only Day 3. Really so far the only free agent I really thought was a good fit that’s off the market already is Desmond Bryant. Ed Reed could land in Houston shortly as well from the sound of it, but this is what the Patriots always do. Let the market settle then stock up on the mid-range free agents.

I’d bet they hit the cornerback market very shortly and it seems like things are shaping up nicely for them to get Talib back in the mix at an affordable rate. We’ll see, but they have too much cap space to be very inactive for long.

A couple days ago, went back and watched the Playoff game vs. Houston, one thing stuck out to me. How much Brady seemed to only zero in on Welker the majority of the time. There would be other options further downfield or uncovered, but there’s Tom, staring Wes down and another three yard gain. I am supportive of BB’s decision and hope this will usher in a new era of offense instead of Welker getting 20 balls a game.

I think when we talk about the offense evolving this is a big part of it. He was safe money in the bank almost on every snap. Brady knew it, and defenses knew it, and that was the key that every game plan would start with when stopping the Pats.

So does Amendola have some similarities to Welker? Sure. But he’s not Welker, and the game plans against the Brady-Welker offense are now out the window. There is of course an element of risk, especially given the Pats track record developing receivers, but it immediately adds an element of change to the offense. You can’t make Welker the center of your game plan, coverages will have to adjust, as will the Patriots offense.

There are still many moves to come this offseason so it’s pointless to talk now about what the new offense will look like, but even if it’s Amendola-Hernandez-Gronk-Lloyd it should be a solid group that can move the chains. Let’s just keep building the defense up to better compliment them as well.

The Jets might be in the most trouble if the draft happens before free agency, because their list of free agents includes wide receivers Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Brad Smith, defensive end Shaun Ellis, inside linebacker David Harris (franchised), cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and Drew Coleman and safeties Brodney Pool, Eric Smith and James Ihedigbo.
