The receivers in this draft that have the best chance are Robert Woods (USC), Keenan Allen (Cal), Chris Harper (Kansas State), Marquise Goodwin (Texas), Josh Boyce (TCU), Tavarres King (Georgia), Cobi Hamilton (Arkansas), and Aaron Mellette (Elon). The feeling here is that Woods offers the best chance at instant impact. He has been highly productive in a pro-style offense, makes terrific cuts in and out of breaks, and shows a great feel for routes and the game. He’s not the most dynamic player, but neither was Lloyd, and Woods looks like he can give what Lloyd did and add toughness and yards after the catch.

The constant theme in season-ending losses of late has been an inability to put enough points on the board. Dating to the Super Bowl loss to the Giants after the 2007 season, the Patriots have scored 14, 14, 14 (if you take out the garbage-time Deion Branch touchdown late vs. Jets), 17, and 13 points in playoff games that ended their seasons.

With that in mind – and with the understanding that New England appears poised to trade back and out of the first round, getting more picks but forfeiting a shot at a truly elite receiver – USC receiver Robert Woods and Cal receiver Keenan Allen appear to be the best possible picks for New England to add a dynamic new element at wide receiver. Both should be available from anywhere between 30 and 40 overall, and the chance to trade back, get more picks and still get an impact receiver with a collegiate history in a pro-style offense should be too much to pass up.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has called the Watertown Police Department, asking for Watertown police hats for his team to wear during the NFL draft this week. Belichick specifically asked for an oversized Watertown police sweatshirt, Deveau said.
