The Best of the Week in PatsPropaganda (Three-Day Weekend Edition)

May 25, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend, and the start of summer, which of course means that football will soon be back.

With OTAs in full swing, and mini camp just a couple weeks away, we’re getting our last bits of new Patriots news before training camp. There were some interesting reads this week, and some interesting listens as well!

Colin Cowherd talks PatsPropaganda, and reads from our Thursday B/R column on Brady’s pending retirement. Definitely one of the top-five highlights of our Patriots blogging mini-career!

When the Patriots put two or more receivers on the field, Ridley faced eight or more men in the box on nearly 25 percent of his runs, the highest ratio in the NFL among backs with 40 or more carries in such situations.

How much of Stevan Ridley’s success has to do with Tom Brady’s presence? Not as much as you think | masslive.com

Interesting stuff, but I think where the numbers get a little murky are when the Pats were running their no-huddle. A lot of the time, defenses weren’t even set when they ran the ball, so it’s hard to really define how many defenders were “in the box”. Some of them might’ve been standing in the box, but looking at the sideline wondering what play to run as Brady snapped the ball and gave it to Ridley.

Great first piece from new Globe NFL writer Ben Volin. You can’t go wrong with Greg Cosell. There’s too much good stuff in here, must read as always when Cosell talks Pats.

Kyle Arrington manned the first team with Talib to open OTAs while Alfonzo Dennard and Dowling manned the second unit — take that as you will. They all looked terrific — add as much salt as necessary, given the lack of pads and contact — in their first run through of the offseason, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Dowling and Dennard get some first-team reps of their own in the weeks to come.
From a pure spectrator standpoint, Dowling looked like the best of the bunch. He appeared crisp in his backpedal, changed direction with supreme fluidity and even broke up a few of Tom Brady‘s passes along the sideline. Talib was working hard out on the corner, and both Dennard and Arrington looked solid in their reps, but, for my money at least, Dowling appeared to be the best player out on the corner.

Ras-I Dowling Might Be Patriots Best Option at Cornerback Alongside Aqib Talib, If He Can Stay Healthy | New England Patriots | NESN.com

Every year I do this dance with Dowling, and I’m not letting myself get too ambitious about what he can do this season. Let’s just see him stay healthy first and go from there.
