Bommarito said Spikes has been impressive in the last couple months of his camp. “Just the way he moves,” Bommarito told the Herald. “Everybody in the NFL is going to move well, obviously, at that level. But when you see a guy that size with that type of power, that type of movement skills, it’s very unique. You’re always going to have different guys that are that size that can move that well, but in addition to that – and I’m not trying to cross over into the football coaching side – you can see it’s evident on tape that he is a complete player. "He moves well. He has all the instincts you’re looking for. It’s just very rare that a guy who has that type of size and can have that type of combination of speed and power. I’m not talking about 40-yard dash speed. I’m just talking about his movement in space of what his position as a linebacker requires. It’s very, very unique. Sometimes, our staff just looks at each other and shakes our head in terms of his ability to produce that much speed. It’s very, very unique.”

Any time you look at a good defense throughout the year, you always had a core group of guys that had been together for a long time. Hopefully we can get that here,” Mayo answered. “Hopefully we can get all the guys here and play with each other for a long time – go through this camp, go through training camp, and build that camaraderie and become a good defense.

Mayo on Spikes’ absence & more – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Mayo could teach a class in Belichickian, still tons of great stuff in here.

Breaking Down Jake Bequette’s Fit in New England | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2013 NFL Draft

Breaking Down Jake Bequette’s Fit in New England | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2013 NFL Draft

Nice breakdown from Oliver Thomas on Jake Bequette, who Mike Reiss noted was getting some time with the starters in OTAs. You can’t read too much into that, as often times BB gives players a shot with the first team to see how they fit and play with the best players around them. Still, Bequette is will be an interesting player to keep an eye on this summer.

Devin McCourty needs us, Patriots fans!

May 30, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The McCourty twins have announced they’re putting together a 5K Run/Walk in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ, as part of the Tackle Sickle Cell campaign.

However, there’s a twist. The twins have have each set up their own fund raising team for the 5K to see which brother can raise more money, with the loser agreeing to fly to the other’s home football city (New England or Tennessee) and make a public appearance dressed up as the team mascot!

So unless you want to see D-Mac dressed up T-Rac (the Titans mascot) visit TackleSickleCell.org and either join the team as an active event participant or if you are unable to attend on June 9th, you can simply donate.

I’ve made it simple for you Pats fans, here’s the direct link to Devin’s page. Let’s do this!

Has there been any words on dates for training camp? And is there any hope for a John Abraham signing during/after it?

May 30, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Camp will likely open Saturday July 27th. The schedule for when fans can attend is usually updated shortly before that, and always seems to be changing.

Last report was that Abraham still wants to play 60% of the snaps, which is unlikely for the Pats. They’d want to use him in a designated pass rusher role, and likely more in the 40-50% range, which, at this point in Abraham’s career is probably smarter, but the guy played for the Jets so who knows what he’s thinking.

Personally, I’d love to see them roll with the defensive ends they have on the roster, and use Buchanan/Bequette/Cunningham in some combination in that role. It’s a little riskier because none are the proven pass rusher that Abraham is, but in the long term it might pay off even more.

Bequette stood out in OTAs to Mike Reiss for what it’s worth.

Why everyone is debating Gronk’s health? I don’t care about OTAs, pre-season, or regular season. It only matters if Grok is healthy for all of the post-season. He’s injury prone, so if Gronk plays fewer games is he more likely to be healthy late in the post season?/!

May 30, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Couple things here, obviously it’s the offseason and there isn’t much else to debate, and second, behind Brady he’s the most popular Patriot out there and given his larger-than-life personality, it’s certainly going to be something people are going discuss ad nauseum. (We’ll keep it limited here of course)…

I think in some ways us Pats fans are spoiled because we almost view the regular season as meaningless at this point, but I do think with the offense undergoing a major turnover we have to realize that we could be in for a race this year.

Miami is going to be better. Mike Pettine should have the Bills defense ready to play Brady the way they need to. And I know everyone like to pile on the Jets but our games with them under Rex are ALWAYS close early in the season.

So yes, of course having Gronk for the stretch run is key, but if he’s PUP’d he’ll miss two division games, and if he’s out until early November he’ll miss four division games. The post-bye portion of the schedule is tough, including the Broncos, Texans and Ravens, so the Pats should still hold their own fate in their hands, but they cannot afford to get into a hole in September and October.

They’ll need Gronk back asap.
