Play of the day goes to rookie receiver Aaron Dobson, who made an impressive adjustment on a ball thrown by Ryan Mallett, who took a pitch back from LeGarrette Blount on a flea-flicker. Dobson showed good field awareness to track the ball, identify where the defenders were and put himself in a position to make the catch.

Aqib Talib showing ‘D’ the way | Boston Herald

So far, on his one-year deal, Talib is proving it. Gonna be expensive next offseason…

Talib was tabbed as one of the Pats’ 10 offseason workout award winners, which comes with the famous front-row parking spot. Even though it was the first offseason award Talib has ever received, he began to develop a reputation as a leader last summer with the Buccaneers. His Pats teammates will back him up on that, too, as they haven’t seen any signs of the negative reputation Talib garnered in his first couple of seasons in the league.

Tweets of Note from Friday’s Patriots Practice

August 2, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Each day seems to get more interesting than the last…

Marcus Benard took some snaps at DT in four-man front, simila to the Cunningham role from last season.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 2, 2013

Random thought: When Tim Tebow takes reps at QB, it is like he is running a different offense than what we see from Brady/Mallett.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 2, 2013

No Cannon, Dowling or Cunningham. They join the usual suspects.

— Nick Underhill (@Nick_Underhill) August 2, 2013

Devin McCourty working on position flexibility/versatility. Spends most of practice at CB, not safety. Worked a bit at CB yesterday too.

Getting a feel for rookie CB Ryan – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Getting a feel for rookie CB Ryan – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

We all know it’s going to happen at some point that Logan Ryan gets thrust into playing a big role. Might as well be sooner than later.

At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, he has good size for the position. That specifically shows up with run force, which the Patriots value as much as anyone with cornerbacks. Ryan doesn’t have the same fluid movements as Talib (few do), but his style of play has some similarities to Arrington (5-10, 190) from this viewpoint. He can be physical at the line of scrimmage and looks to have flexibility to line up inside and outside. Some competitive ball skills as well.

Keeping in mind where Mallett was last year in training camp, the 2012 regular season and this past offseason seem to have really paid off in his development. As for Tebow, it’s always important to remember what he is (a movement quarterback with uncommon ability to make something happen on the fly), rather than what he isn’t (a traditional drop-back passer). He’s steadily shown improvement in his decisiveness, appearing more comfortable by the day.

[E]ven with the spring already under their belt, the Patriots are still looking at just about everyone in an effort to put Brady in the position to drive the franchise to its fourth championship.

Tom Brady, New England Patriots still catching up on offense – NFL.com

Makes sense. Unpredictable and inconsistent, but hopefully explosive.

It seems clear that the tight end centric offense is not going to be as valuable going forward. With Doobson, Boyce, Amendola, and Edelman looking good (when healthy) do you see a dramatic rise in four and give receiver sets coming???

I think the two-TE offense was more a function of playing to their strengths, just like this year’s will be. They’ll never try to force an offense that doesn’t fit the players they have. So I do think we’ll see more 11 personnel than 12 personnel, but it will depend on the opponent. They’ll still have decent size up front, especially when Gronk gets back, if they need to lean on a power running game with two-TEs.

The biggest difference I see is that they won’t be able to go into their blitzkreig no-huddle like they could with four experience weapons like the had they last two seasons. The offense will be a little more conventional, but hopefully a little more explosive downfield as well.

What’s your view on Dobson? He has some catches this season but he never seems to make a contested catch or add YAC… From @JPBergmann

The next two games are somewhat critical to Dobson because LaFell could return Week 7 vs. the Jets. Last week we saw them work Keshawn Martin in a little bit, I’m not sure if that’s a reflection on Dobson or just the overall attempt to get a look at the lower end roster guys against […]
