Source: Gronkowski could be ready by Week 3 | Boston Herald

Like the sound of this, but let’s not rush it please!

According to a source, Gronk is doing very well in his rehabillitation from back and forearm surgeries performed in May and June. He’s “right on schedule” for a mid-September return. In fact, he’s healed and advanced to the point where he would be close to playing Week 1 in Buffalo, the source said. However, the more realistic time frame for him to be ready and in “football shape” would be shortly after, right around Game 3 against Tampa Bay assuming there are no setbacks.

Tom Brady and Danny Amendola Light Up the Buccaneers

The Patriots quarterback was efficient in his command of the offense, dictated the pace of the game at the line of scrimmage and consistently produced in the short-to-intermediate route tree coming off an injury in practice last week. However, what really stood out on the field was the connection Brady had with Amendola. One could gather this conclusion by simply checking out the routes from the slot (option, whip option, bubble screen) and the quick, three-step out cuts when Amendola was aligned as a No. 1 receiver. And don’t forget about the deep seam route the wide receiver caught for a touchdown versus the Buccaneers’ Cover 2 defense. Sound familiar? It should, because those are some of the same concepts we saw in the past from Wes Welker in the Patriots playbook.

In practices and preseason games, the top tight end pairing has been Jake Ballard (Gronkowski’s spot) and rookie Zach Sudfeld (Aaron Hernandez’s old spot). Ballard is a strong blocker, but even he acknowledged that he can’t match Gronkowski in the passing game. Those two look like they have a strong grip on roster spots, with veterans Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui possibly battling for a third spot. If Gronkowski is kept on the 53-man roster, it’s possible both Fells and Hoomanawanui might be affected as there might not be room for four tight ends. Economics could also be a factor as Fells is scheduled to earn a base salary of $1.25 million and Hoomanawanui $1.3 million. The Patriots might find those salaries rich for a No. 3-4 tight end.

No need to rush Gronk, Pats should play the long game, get Ballard and Sudfeld experience and let Gronk ease back into things in mid-October.

Q: What is your assessment of Jamie Collins after last week’s game?

BB: I thought he showed up. He’s learning. He’s doing some different things for us. Defensively he’s got some different responsibilities playing at the end of the line, playing off the line, playing in sub situations, playing a lot in the kicking game. He’s learning every day and I think he’s definitely making progress.
