Both of them are easily two of the toughest guys I’ve been involved with,” Leach said. “There’d be bigger guys and faster guys, but they were the best receivers. Wes’s body of work in New England speaks for itself, and I think they’re going to be really pleased with Danny, too.

Vellano (aligned as a 3-technique, outside shade on guard) showed nice initial quickness to beat veteran left guard Rob Sims on a one-on-one rush to the inside. He caught Sims lunging and made him pay. That’s one area that Vellano has flashed at times in camp, first-step quickness as a rusher in tight spaces. But other times, Vellano’s relative lack of size (6-2, 300) was evident against the Lions as he was more easily blocked in the running game (e.g. Montell Owens’ 6-yard run with 7:05 remaining in the quarter). The Patriots are thin at defensive tackle and Vellano, at the least, looks like a strong practice squad candidate.

Here’s my interview with AllPurposeRoto from yesterday in which I discussed the New England Patriots football team, as you might’ve guessed.
On the topic of why Vince Wilfork didn’t play, Belichick said, “We just didn’t put him in. That’s why.” Because? “Because there were other players who played.”

Good news, Andre Carter should provide some good veteran leadership and a little boost to a defense that has already lost two captains and looked lost on third downs against the Jets. Per @JosinaAnderson, DE Andre Carter intends to sign with the New England Patriots today. #Patriots — Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) October 22, 2013
