Interesting stuff about why the “walk about” is always tough to dissect. Makes sense why we see a lot of quick snaps against the Ryan’s to offset the effectiveness of it.

I asked Greg why these line sets and specific pressure concepts can throw off any quarterback –- even one as alert and proven as Brady. “It’s really common sense, if you think about it,” Greg said. “Tom Brady sets the protection at the line of scrimmage, and here’s how you set the protections -– you have to choose the five players the offensive linemen are going to block. And then, when you get to six and seven rushers, backs and tight ends become responsible for them. When there’s no defensive linemen, and nobody with their hands on the ground –- they’re kind of milling around in undefined amorphous positions –- who do you designate as the five defensive players to be blocked by the five offensive linemen? "So now, Brady comes to the line, and he sees seven or eight people [at least] standing up. How does he set the protection? How does the offensive line know who to block?”

Just a little nudge for those getting too close to the edge on Brady… 😉

Brady showed poor mechanics on a number of his passes, which caused problems with his accuracy and velocity. The most problematic of the lot came on the second-quarter interception. Brady appeared to get no drive off his back leg and slowly progressed through his throwing motion, which ended with his upper body kind of falling over his front leg as he released the ball. As a result, the ball didn’t go where he wanted and it was easily intercepted. There was a somewhat uncomfortable situation to his left with Nate Solder blocking Quinton Coples, though it’s not clear how much that affected the play. … Brady never appeared comfortable during the second half and had trouble finding his marks despite being granted an average of 2.49 seconds to throw. On a fourth quarter pass that was thrown behind Kenbrell Thompkins, Brady was granted more than six seconds to get rid of the ball and was unable to find his mark. … Brady missed another pass on the fake double reverse the Patriots seem to run every week. The play rarely works and you have to wonder why it continues to be called.

I think overall we didn’t give up a lot of yardage in the passing game. Most of what we did give up was on third down so it’s kind of a double problem there but giving up the yardage on third down led to the conversions which then led to [52] runs. We just collectively, as a defense, if we could just improve our third-down play from what it was last week, that would have made things look a lot better in that game.

Football is a team game and the quarterback can’t do it all himself. The blocking was atrocious in the third quarter on Sunday, creating a situation that would have made life hard for most quarterbacks. The receivers aren’t getting open consistently. The play-calling, from my view, isn’t giving the running game enough of a chance to get going to ease the burden on the up-and-down passing game. This isn’t to spare Brady accountability, because I think he’d be the first to admit he can play better, but I maintain that if he’s the biggest problem for the team than ultimately it will still be in the championship hunt.

Is a future without Tom Brady finally sinking in?

I’m not really worried about the future without Tom Brady yet. I’m worried about getting the new offense healthy and up to speed. Seems like people are conveniently forgetting the change and injuries the offense has undergone this year. I know everyone expects 35+ points every game, but that’s just not realistic. It’s not 2007 anymore. Take this season in and of itself and realize it’s a process and it’s about putting together a clutch offense that comes through in January.

Look around the rest of the NFL and the AFC especially. Has there ever been this much parity? The Pats have been in every single game, and granted they’ve all been a grind to the end, but that’s how the best teams are formed in the regular season. Those are the teams that are the hardest to eliminate in the playoffs, because they’ve been through adversity, they’ve kept fighting and really, they have nothing to lose.

I know the rest of the AFC East is not-so-patiently waiting for Brady to completely fall apart, but I think they’ll be waiting another couple seasons for that.
