I find fascinating that again, when eveyone in the media analysts and the fans is calling for New England to address the TE, 3rd DE and interior OL positions in free agency, Belichick just goes get a new #1 and #2 corners that can play man and press

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Part of it is that’s how the market unfolded. There’s no question they needed a top cornerback, with Talib being the most likely target. Outside of Demarcus Ware and Lamarr Houston, there really haven’t been many defensive ends flying off the board.

Let’s also not forget that they did re-sign Hooman, so that is a way address Tight End, and they had quite a few interior OL and DE Matt Shaughnessy visit.

So ultimately I think we’re all on track for what the needs are, it’s just played out in a different order than we might’ve expected.

Brady, Belichick and Revis Built this City on Rock n’ Roll.

This video has left me speechless and I cannot stop watching it!! But yeah, it pretty much sums up how giddy I’m feeling about watching this trio together this year. Wow.

Sing It Kitty- Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Darrelle Revis (by Ken Dis-Chargeman)

Thanks to @614Patsfan for sending it to me… I think.

If the Patriots do release Wilfork, how do you think they’ll go about filling the hole at DT? With the cap space that would be available by releasing him, would it make sense to focus primarily on the draft, as far as DT goes? Or that, along with bringing in a veteran FA?

Wrote a pretty long piece about this exact thing yesterday. Check it out here for the answer.

I do think they’ll have to make defensive tackle a little more priority both in the draft and for the rest of free agency. Two solid players should do the trick and make for a solid rotation. That’s what I want most.

LOL MIKE I SPENT THE DAY READING YOU SAY REVIS TO PATS WAS A PIPE DREAM AT THE VERY END IT HAPPENED

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

What can I say, sometimes pipe dreams come true! I just didn’t see Revis taking a deal like the one he took.

Every year I am shocked by a move the Patriots make and I’ve followed them as closely as anybody since 2006. That’s what I love about the team. They drop bombshells EVERY SINGLE OFFSEASON and even I never see them coming!

Think pats might switch to 34

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

I can’t not answer 34/43 questions, but really it’s just semantics now. Sub is the new base defense and has been for at least the past four seasons.

So what we’re talking about is that 30% of the snaps. The traditional 3-4 we saw 2002ish-2008ish is essentially dead except for specialty matchups when the Pats really just want to stop the run.

The problem with it? All three linemen are essentially just being asked to hold their ground while the linebackers make all the plays. There are too many athletes and the quarterbacks are too good now to have three players who aren’t getting pressure nor making plays in space.

At least with Wilfork, the Pats’ 4-3 was almost more of a 2-5 version of this in 2011-2013, although usually only one of the defensive linemen (Wilfork) would two-gap.

Will they have three guys with their hands in the dirt now? Sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s that old 3-4 defense and likely at least one or two of those defensive linemen will be playing only one gap. In the old 3-4, they all would’ve been playing two.

Now it’s a mix and match defense and the majority they’re in a 4-2-5 nickel.

Do you think the Revis acquisition might allow the Pats to move a safety all the way up to defend the run more frequently than in the past? This might be especially relevant if they lose both Wilfork and Spikes, their two best run defenders. I’m also wondering if having Revis changes what they look for in a strong safety this year.

March 14, 2014 by Mike Dussault

There’s no question, Revis will bring a lot of flexibility to the rest of the defense. You look at how the Jets often used him and that’s where the term “Revis Island” came from… he’s on one side, while the entire secondary is over on the other side.

I think it’s part of the reason why Browner (pending) makes sense as well because they need that physical presence in the middle of the field, even in a hybrid corner/strong safety role. Or go McCourty/Harmon deep, Browner underneath, Revis on the best threat and then some combination of Arrington/Ryan/Dennard on the other threats.

I just don’t worry about the run anymore. Maybe that’s foolish and maybe teams will load up and try to run more on the Pats as they see Wilfork (maybe) and Spikes (definitely) depart. But even from the part the Pats have left they’re all pretty stout – Hightower, Ninkovich, Chandler, Tommy Kelly (assuming). If a team wants to come in, cycle two-three backs and run 50 times on us, I’d love to see how it works out for them.

Wilfork’s agent’s next step is to find out Wilfork’s value on the open market, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday. Wilfork’s camp would then weigh Wilfork’s value in free agency against the Patriots’ restructured contract offer and make a decision on the 10-year veteran’s future.

Report: Vince Wilfork Could Be Back With Patriots On Restructured Deal | New England Patriots | NESN.com

Well, he’s not gone yet. All things being equal I’d want Vince back on the roster, no question. But they couldn’t just throw him back in to play 85% of the snaps like he was doing before. As part of a rotation, playing closer to 50% I think he could be really effective still.

And now a word from Seabass…

Thank you to the Kraft family, Coach Belichick and the entire Patriots organization. I’m truly blessed. Thanks for all the kind words. — Sebastian Vollmer (@SebVollmer) March 26, 2013
