Patriots Monday OTA Observation Huddle Up

June 7, 2010 by Mike Dussault

You gotta love these random media access days at OTAs. They really help you get through the hardest part of The Void (along with purchasing the NFL Preview magazines that are starting to hit the stands.

Here are some collective things that we found interesting from various beat reporter coverage:

From Reiss:

It’s a practice like this that crystallizes why Brady likes having David Patten on the field, as “Chief” always seems to be in the right place. Meanwhile, it’s a work in progress with second-year receiver Brandon Tate, who lined up opposite Randy Moss and Julian Edelman and is getting coached up quite a bit by Brady.

For all those who complained when the Patriots signed David Patten it’s things like this that should be exhibit A of why he was brought in. There’s far more to constructing a football team than the game day roster. Even if Patten doesn’t make the team he is already making an impact on the 2010 Patriots.

From PFW:

Chung got a lot of reps working alongside Brandon Meriweather

Pat Chung once again wore a red, non-contact jersey for the non-contact OTA.

I spoke about how much I love Chung on PatsCast and I like seeing that he’s getting a lot of time with Meriweather. Chung might not be the biggest guy but I think his personality could be infectious for this young New England secondary. I also think he might be wearing the red jersey more to remind himself to take it easy than to remind others.

From Shalise:

Darius Butler made the play of the day, jumping in front of a Tom Brady pass intended for Julian Edelman on the sideline for an interception.

Early signs of Butler locking down the starting LCB position are looking good. The real battle will be McCourty versus Wilhite at Nickel.

Brady still rocking the new facemask. If he’s got it on in training camp the switch is permanent.

Welker’s Still Practicing, and other news…

June 7, 2010 by Mike Dussault

Two more days of media access to OTAs this week. Let’s hope we stay injury free and maybe hear a little more about Tyrone McKenzie, Patrick Chung and Brandon Tate (aka this years x-factors). Early word is already out that Welker is back out there again, practicing as he did last week. This is a good sign, clearly he hasn’t had a setback and should continue to get better as we close in on training camp.

The season predictions are starting to roll in and, as we expected, the Jets are the sexy pick in the AFCE. Some people even have the Dolphins over the Pats, calling the Patriots “looking vulnerable” or saying they “just doesn’t ring like recent Patriots groups”. Well, last year at this time it looked like Bruschi and Seymour would be 2009 Pats, so in reality last years team wasn’t much different than the 2010 will be.

2009 was ground zero in the rebuilding process of the defense and they still won the AFC East. I don’t know how much better the Dolphins and Jets will truly be, but I feel extrememly confident that the Patriots will be significantly better, more experienced, hungrier, with an offense that will be as dangerous as anyones.

Cromartie Reality Check

Look at the physical, reckless style that Cromartie plays with. Such effort. Such enthusiasm.

Patriots Schwag Hunt: Ebay Find

Patriots Schwag Hunt: Ebay Find

In honor of the Welker Miracle I found this “signed” authentic Welker throwback jersey for $99. Are we certain it’s an authentic signature? Nope, but $99 for an authentic all-sewn throwback is a great deal even if it was fake. And who knows, the autograph might be real.

Welker Could Be Ready Week One

June 4, 2010 by Mike Dussault

Welker Could Be Ready Week One

Breer got himself kicked out of a practice for his early tweet that Welker was back, but he’s clearly been all over this story.  Some really interesting new info:

Tom Brady and Welker’s respective knee surgeries were quite different. While it had been reported widely that Brady’s MCL healed on its own, I was told that was not the case. His MCL was torn in an area where it couldn’t heal naturally to the bone, and needed to be surgically repaired.

The Pats are going to have a hard decision to make at the start of training camp. With three divisional opponents in their first four games having Welker back at the start would be greatly beneficial. Perhaps the early bye will be a blessing as he’ll have a chance to rest in case he’s not quite there yet.

The Myth of Dominating After Thanksgiving

It seems to be generally accepted that NFL teams should start playing their best football after Thanksgiving, leading to peak performance in the playoffs in January and ultimately a Super Bowl title in February. As if there is a clear progression to be made, that slowly builds to a climax in the big game. However […]
