Patriots Off-Season Reset

February 8, 2019 by Mike Dussault

As much as I want to fight the desire to turn the page to the offseason and enjoy the afterglow of the Super Bowl win as much as possible, the NFL schedule is relentless.

The scouting combine is just a few weeks away then comes free agency the draft, OTAs and once again, training camp.

We knew this offseason was coming whether the Pats won the Super Bowl or not. Trey Flowers is still the biggest piece of the puzzle, but how much have things changed since my in-season glance ahead now that the Pats are Super Bowl 53 champs?

Here’s a look at how the playoff run might’ve altered my outlook.

5 Matchups to Define Super Bowl 53

January 29, 2019 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots have no shortage of old Super Bowl matchups to go back and consider when looking at the Los Angeles Rams and what might make the difference in Super Bowl 53.

Eight Super Bowls, all of which really could’ve gone either way. But here the Pats are at 5-3 in those tight games. What a stressful rollercoaster they’ve all been!

Many are hoping that this one won’t take another year off their lives, but really, the Patriots gift to the NFL has been this thrilling games that are a far departure from some of the blowouts of the 80’s and 90’s.

Since 2000, the average margin of victory in a Patriots Super Bowl? 4.25 points. The other 10 they didn’t play in? 15.3 including blowouts of 35 (2013, Hi Peyton), and 27 (twice, 2000 and 2002). Just three of those 10 were a single digit margin of victory.

No one will cry for us, but that kind stress has added up over the years and probably why I feel pre-nauseous already. I can’t help but assume this one will be close too and that it will be decided in five key matchups.

Super Bowl 53 Early Scouting Report: Los Angeles Rams

January 23, 2019 by Mike Dussault

I couldn’t help but jump into some Rams research this morning, as much as I’d like to bask in the glow of the win in Kansas City forever. With just one opponent left to beat there is total clarity and the Rams were just sitting there waiting for me.

Scariest thing about the Rams is they’ve got the Patriots’ Super Bowl kryptonite — the dopey white QB.

— Mike Dussault (@PatsPropaganda) January 22, 2019

Yes, Jared Goff has that certain nothing that Eli and Foles had, but what is more scary is the Rams have the kind of interior defensive line those Giants and Eagles teams did.

Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh are easy nightmare fuel for a pocket passer like Tom Brady. Add a fast and aggressive defense around them and this Rams has all the pieces needed to slow down the Patriots attack.

Let’s dive into some other initial impressions of the Rams.

What Went Right in ’01,’04 and Wrong in ’06,’13,’15?

January 18, 2019 by Mike Dussault

There might not be two more impressive wins of the Patriots Dynasty than taking down the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in both the 2001 and 2004 AFC Championships. Since then, the Pats are 0-3 on the road in the conference championship, a trend they’ll want to reverse against the Chiefs on Sunday.

It got me wondering, what did those two teams have that the latter three did not? What enabled them to win the second-biggest game of the season in a hostile environment? What might we draw to this year’s Patriots squad?

A Quick Look Ahead Patriots 2019 Offseason

January 4, 2019 by Mike Dussault

There’s no better weekend than wild card weekend when you’re on the bye week. There’s wall-to-wall playoff football and no stress if you’re a Patriots fan.

It’s easy to overreact to how the season ends so now’s a good time to take a quick glance ahead at the storylines we’ll turn the page to as soon as we know the final fate of the 2018 Pats.

Here are the six areas to get a jump on:

Patriots 2018 Season Snap Counts: Nobody Died

January 2, 2019 by Mike Dussault

If nothing else, the NFL season depends on attrition. Just a key injury to a player or two can completely derail the best-laid offseason plans. It happened in the first quarter of the first game of the 2008 Patriots’ season. That’s why you shouldn’t bet on Super Bowl 53 in June.

These days, all that really matters is if Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, Dont’a Hightower and Rob Gronkowski make it to January. Despite any regular season ups and downs these guys have always shown up when the lights are brightest. And they will always give the Patriots a fighting chance in any game, even in, gasp, Kansas City.

Here we are on the playoff bye week and guess what, nobody died. Outside of the disappointing loss of Ja’whaun Bentley and a few guys taking a game off here and there, the 2018 Patriots have remained remarkably healthy and that is everything to their Super Bowl chances.

They’ve got their bumps and bruises for sure, as does every team, but with every key veteran piece accounted for the Pats should still have their best football in front of them.

Here’s a breakdown of who played the most, it’s no surprise the Pats once again gained a first round bye.

Bend Don’t Break Defense Analytics Update

December 20, 2018 by Mike Dussault

It was just a couple weeks ago when the Bend Don’t Break Defense Analytic had the Patriots ranking as one of the top five defenses under Belichick. Two games later, things have planed off a bit as you might expect, but there’s one consistent factor that gives the Pats’ defense hope for the playoffs.

Let’s dive into the changes in the four key areas:

What’s up with Stephen Gostkowski? – Sure, he nailed a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to salvage his day, but his two misses really stunk. On his first attempt, a 49-yarder, he missed it wide right, appearing to not get a lot on the ball. Six minutes later, he missed a 42-yard attempt […]
