Quick-hit thoughts around NFL, Pats – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

One line of thinking is that Bill Belichick will throw the kitchen sink at second-year Titans quarterback Jake Locker, who is making his first career start. I wouldn’t be surprised if the message to players is the opposite and that the plan is actually more straightforward because of concern in overloading a young defense. This might be a bit harsh, but that line of thinking seems to be based more on reputation than recent results. When was the last time we saw a successful “throw the kitchen sink at a young quarterback” plan from Belichick that made anyone say “Wow”?

My list of what I’m more interested in seeing?

  1. The Patriots playing a meaningful football game again.
  2. How the offense juggles Lloyd, Welker, Hernando and Gronk around.
  3. Who’s on the field on defense on third down.
  4. What does our running game look like, really.
  5. Finally, and most importantly, what BB is wearing.

Mayo figures to be on the field all three downs, but next to him, do the Patriots use Hightower, Spikes or White, or do they use a “money” safety like Tavon Wilson or Nate Ebner and have that player spy Locker or Johnson out of the backfield? Would they use this dime package even against a base offensive set from the Titans? Would doing so risk a mismatch against Cook in the middle of the field?
