It was certainly ugly on both sides of the ball for a good chunk of it but both sides turned it around. Turnovers from the defense and a dominant run game that hasn’t been seen since the days of Corey Dillon led the way.

If the Patriots sit in zones all day, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will find the holes. What the Patriots need to do is junk their conservative coverages and get physical at the line of scrimmage with the Bills. The longer Fitzpatrick has to hold onto the ball, the more it plays into the Patriots’ hands. The rush will be able to affect Fitzpatrick, and he’ll start to throw the ball into bad spots. The Bills want Fitzpatrick to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible to keep him from making mistakes. Don’t give him easy, quick reads at the snap. And furthermore, the linebackers need to tee off on any crossing patterns. Don’t let them feel comfortable.
Still think running back Shane Vereen has something to offer the Patriots’ offense, and today would be a good time to tap his speed and pass-catching ability. With receiver Julian Edelman (hand) out, it takes away one of the team’s more explosive weapons, and Vereen – while utilized differently – could help provide some spark. The 2011 second-round pick hasn’t been active this season, in part because of a foot injury sustained Aug. 24 in the third preseason game at Tampa. But the Patriots have already ruled out six players today, and with just one more player to be declared inactive, one would think the opening is there for Vereen to emerge.
