Morning after: Seahawks 24, Patriots 23 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Morning after: Seahawks 24, Patriots 23 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Here’s a Wet Blanket of Reason towel snap for this Monday morning…

Patriots lead Giants 17-9 with 11:20 left in third quarter of the Super Bowl and don’t score again and lose. Patriots lead Cardinals 9-6 early in third quarter and are outscored 14-0 before losing. Patriots lead Ravens 30-21 with 14:10 left in fourth quarter and go scoreless before losing. Patriots lead Seahawks 23-10 with 9:21 left in the fourth quarter and go scoreless before losing. Not acceptable. Have to find a way to execute better and get the final score to win the game. I mean, one touchdown on six trips in the red zone? And twice the Patriots were inside the 10-yard line and got zero points. Unreal. One thing that crossed my mind as I watched Tom Brady get up very slowly after the roughing penalty he took to the head, was that he might have been a little woozy. After the hit, Brady was 5-12 for 81 yards, one interception, one sack and one grounding penalty.

Where is the finish, Patriots? – BostonHerald.com

Where is the finish, Patriots? – BostonHerald.com

There are two types of stories you’ll read this week, ones about the secondary or ones about how they can’t finish on either side of the ball.

Finishing is really less of a concern to me. It’s something that has to be learned every season somewhat, and just because this team is taking a little longer to gain that killer instinct doesn’t overly concern me. Yet.

Brady in particular had his shaky moments when he most needed to be a steady hand, throwing two interceptions — and Seattle safety Earl Thomas dropped a third that was a potential pick-six had he held on. But this was not simply about Brady or the running backs. This was a systemic cratering at crunch time. The offense faced a third-and-2 at the Seattle 17 with nine minutes to play and the offensive line got buried; Stevan Ridley was flattened for no gain before the Patriots settled for a field goal. They led 23-10, so their growing offensive struggles did not seem significant, but the game was trending the way the Arizona and Baltimore ones had. The later it got, the less the offense produced. When something was needed most, it did the least.

On seven of the eight drives the Patriots did not allow a play over 20 yards, guess what? They allowed zero points. The lone exception was the pass interference penalty by Patrick Chung that was later erased by a fumble. The other four drives were littered with explosive plays and they directly resulted in all 24 points.

Starting right cornerback Kyle Arrington was demoted after the second series, with rookie Alfonzo Dennard elevated into his role. Arrington played only seven snaps the rest of the game, all coming in the slot in sub.

biggest concern on the roster now seems to be the DT position. don’t think they can hold off on drafting a stud any longer. after that, solid o line depth would be essential in keeping brady upright in his final seasons.

I agree with that, and at this point they’ll really need something out of Marcus Forston since DT3 looks like the biggest defensive problem spot at the moment. Love what Tommy Kelly could and should bring to the party, but one more stud defensive tackle would truly make for a special interior rotation. I’ll have […]
