I do give the Jets a chance,” Woody said. “The only reason I say that is that history tells us, if you look at the series since Rex Ryan has been here, this series has been really competitive. I think this game has more so to do with Mark Sanchez than anyone. If Mark Sanchez doesn’t turn the ball over, then they have a shot. Because the Jets defense has been playing pretty good the past few weeks. If Mark Sanchez turns the ball over, it could be a blowout.

Pressure from Patriots may be short-lived – Patriots – Boston.com

Pressure from Patriots may be short-lived – Patriots – Boston.com

Closing the book on the Colts game with Greg Bedard’s wrap up. Lots of good stuff about the decision to blitz or not to blitz.

That the Patriots suddenly blitzed their highest percentage of the season (30.9 percent of the dropbacks) and had their most total pressure concepts (43.6 percent) can be attributed to the coordinator the Patriots were playing against (Bruce Arians), and also the opponent themselves. Dating to the start of the 2010 season, of the six games with the highest number of blitzes, Arians was coordinator of three of those teams: 2010 Steelers (23 blitzes), 2012 Colts (17), and 2011 Steelers (14). Why the need to throw so much at an Arians offense? Likely for two reasons: because quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger (especially) and Luck don’t make a lot of mistakes unless forced into them; and Arians’s offense lives off deep drops from center by the quarterback and a lot of deep routes. If the quarterbacks aren’t rushed, there could be big trouble down the field.

Those looking for a quick snapshot of the high level in which right tackle Sebastian Vollmer is playing, cue up the tape to back-to-back plays (14:13 and 13:30 left) at the start of the third quarter. Vollmer’s athleticism stands out as he gets in front of a receiver screen to clear a path (yes, that was an offensive tackle squaring up a defensive back) for Julian Edelman, and then on the next snap, he absolutely stonewalled Jerry Hughes when Hughes attempted a spin move in the pass rush. Doesn’t get much better than that. Vollmer, who is in the final year of his contract, is putting himself in position to cash in.

First two are ugly, but the restof it looks pretty good. That 5 play-74 yard touchdown drive to start the 4th quarter wasn’t encouraging, but overall one of their best games of the year.

This week’s Bottom Line Player of the Week is an easy choice for me. It’s a guy that I wasn’t overly impressed with based on what was available of YouTube highlights. A guy I put on my big board somewhat reluctantly. And a guy that suddenly became the fastest riser just a week before the […]
