FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS Week 12 DVOA Ratings

Slow day here at the Ministry of PatsPropaganda, but here are the weekly Football Outsiders rankings.

First, on a historic note the 2012 Patriots offense is currently ranked 9th all time in offensive DVOA, behind such other Patriots teams as the ‘07 Pats (1st all time) and ’10 Pats (4th all time).

Overall here are the current ratings:

  • Overall: 2nd
  • Offense: 1st (pass 1st, run 2nd)
  • Defense: 21st (pass 19th, run 7th)
  • Special Teams: 2nd

In terms of pass coverage here’s how they stack up against various types of receivers:

  • vs. #1 WR: 6th
  • vs. #2 WR: 7th
  • vs. other WR: 30th
  • vs. TE: 29th
  • vs. RB: 23rd

As you can see, the struggles covering the middle of the field continue…

It hasn’t been two months, but is it possible to play the position better than Brady has since the loss against the Seahawks in Week 6? Now, Brady was lousy in that game, in fact the reason the team lost (two terrible picks, one in the red zone and his worst throw in years, a back-foot panic job into the end zone that was flagged for intentional grounding to end the first half and cost the Patriots at least three points) and when the Patriots got on the plane in Seattle they were 3-3 and no one was writing much about Brady’s greatness. But in the last five games he has been at least brilliant, completing 114-of-178 passes (64.1 percent) for 1,454 yards and 14 TDs with zero interceptions.

Things are starting to settle down a bit in the Patriots secondary for sure, but let’s see how they do against Houston and the 49ers before we get too excited.

The Patriots have cycled through a slew of defensive backs this season. Injuries, ineffectiveness and skipping on from ineffective combinations have forced their hand into moving guys around. But it now seems the intangible and invaluable attributes of confidence, aggressiveness and trust are starting to emerge. “You know how quickly it moves and how fast the game is, especially at that position,” said Belichick. “Just a split-second of anticipation or of saved reaction time can make the difference between making a play and giving up a play and those split-seconds are very hard to measure but the difference can be the difference in a game. So if you think that it’s improving, I think it should continue to improve, it needs to continue to improve. We’ve gotta really work hard at it. That’s everybody.”
