Three-point stance: Pats at the bye – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Three-point stance: Pats at the bye – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Interesting quote below but let’s remember Talib hasn’t played all that much in the last two games. I think his addition has enabled them to do some new things, but I wouldn’t say he and Dennard have been the defensive saviors. What I don’t get is why they can’t be this aggressive from the get-go?

New England’s aggressive defensive play calling has paid off. Week 17’s win against Miami marked New England’s fourth straight game with an interception using added pressure. Since Aqib Talib joined the Patriots in Week 11, they have sent five or more pass rushers on 35.1 percent of dropbacks. That number has jumped from 15.0 percent over the first nine weeks of the season, the most conservative number in the league. When healthy, Talib and rookie Alfonzo Dennard have provided quality cornerback play and enabled New England to commit extra pass rushers. Since the Talib addition, the Patriots have allowed opposing quarterbacks a 51.1 completion percentage, three touchdowns and five interceptions with at least five rushers (73.6 completion percentage, four touchdowns and no interceptions in first nine games).

I think Coach [Bill Belichick] said it best this morning,” Brady told reporters on Wednesday. “He said, ‘You make one mistake in this type of game and that’s your season.’ It’s no more, ‘I’ll get it figured out next week and it’s something we have to learn from and move on from.’ No, it’s your season. That’s the kind of urgency you have in practice and certainly when we play here a week from Sunday.

Ninkovich returns to practice. Perhaps no development was more important this week than the return of defensive end Rob Ninkovich to practice on Thursday. Reports earlier in the week indicated that his injured hip might not prevent him from playing in the Divisional Round, and while practicing on Thursday should not be mistaken for a guarantee that he’ll suit up next Sunday, it’s a positive sign for the team leader in sacks. Ninkovich has developed into a critical three-down defensive player for the team, and gives them a versatile player to set the edge from both an end and linebacker alignment.

Ninkovich was back at practice today for the Pats and it’s an excellent sign. Regardless of how limited he was today he’s clearly responding to treatment*.

I thought we had lost you, Ninkopoop! Safe to say we can dub him “super tough” along with Logan Mankins?

Patriots Mini-Camp Day 2 Wrap

Never fun when real work and fake work (i.e. blogging) collide because the one that pays me is going to win out every time, and that ain’t blogging. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have one eyeball on all things Patriots mini-camp related today. Some points of interest to pass along: It seems like a […]
