My take on Spikes is that there are other contractual issues that would jump ahead of it, and I’d personally let at least half the year play out before exploring it. The reason is that I’d want more information (i.e. Is he healthy? Are his skills improving?) before committing significant future dollars to him. I also consider this: When the Patriots traded up in the first round to select Hightower in 2012, they didn’t do it because they viewed him as a two-down player. He should be on the field on third down based on where he was selected. I think he will be and it’s just finding the role that maximizes his talent. On the coverage linebacker on the whole, I think it’s one of those things that would be nice to have but it’s not mandatory. Similar to you, I like the idea of them playing more dime with either Wilson (Adrian, Tavon) in a linebacker-type role this season. The hope is that you’re strong enough against the run in doing so and don’t get run over like the Bills did when they played almost exclusively a dime package in the first meeting versus the Patriots last year.

29. New England Patriots: This is where Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson comes off my board. He’s a multi-dimensional weapon that can align anywhere in the formation, including the backfield, which he did at Tennessee. He is dynamic with the ball in his hands: shifty, elusive and explosive. He has open field movement ability that you cannot teach. And remember, he’s 6-foot-2 and 216 pounds. My guess is Bill Belichick will figure out a way to utilize him effectively. But don’t lose sight of the fact that Patterson has much work to do as receiver. At this point, he is not as quick and explosive as a route runner as he is with the ball in his hands. He’s more measured and methodical. He has little sense of the pace and tempo of route running, and how to set up and beat corners. But he has the athletic traits you look for; in addition, he showed good hands, and a willingness to make tough catches in the middle of the field.

I think the draft is a part of the process. Really, the team-building exercise, it kind of never stops. It’s ongoing, it’s just specific to one segment of the year. Most of the time, free agency comes before the draft. We had one instance where it didn’t. The team-building process is nonstop, it’s ongoing, and once we get post-draft, there will be a period during training camp – like Rob Ninkovich, just to pick a name, I think we signed him in August 2009 in training camp. And Rob has ended up being one of the better players that we’ve had in our program. It’s constant, it’s going, it really never stops, and in the end, the most important thing is to do whatever we can to help our team win games.

The chance to pair Wilfork with a similar attacker would instantly improve the Pats’ front. At 31, it’s hardly unrealistic to wonder how much longer Wilfork can play at an elite level. A violent defensive pairing would be helpful, but the opportunity to use more of a rotation, limit Wilfork’s reps to save his long-term endurance and, ideally, not suffer too much of a drop-off would be a luxury.
