Observations from 10th practice – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Don’t think Tavon has had the camp anyone was hoping for. Could be a dark horse to not make the cut, especially with Duron Harmon getting a long look at safety next to McCourty.

One of the areas where the Patriots struggled last season was with their safeties gaining depth and width in Cover 2, something that eventually improved when Devin McCourty was shifted to free safety. Second-year safety Tavon Wilson has had some struggles during training camp thus far, and it appeared as though he fell victim to a deep pass in Cover 2 on Tuesday. The completion down the right side of the field came behind both him and rookie cornerback Logan Ryan. Not knowing the coverage, it’s tough to say with certainty where the breakdown occurred, but it looked like Cover 2 from afar.

Everybody’s working at it,” Brady said. “I would say we have a long way to go, and we’re doing some good things and we’re doing some things that we need to eliminate. We were talking last night about how to eliminate mistakes before they happen because we just can’t afford to make them and say, ‘Well, we’ll get it the next time.’ Those ‘next times’ are going to cost you wins and losses here shortly. (As) the pace picks up, there’s more installation that goes in. There’s more coverages, more things we’re seeing, so we’ve got to be able to incorporate what we’re doing in the meeting rooms and bring it out here on the field and execute, really going at a fast speed.

Same guys keep stepping up, and these three could be huge difference makers when it comes to last year’s problems.

THREE UP

TE Zach Sudfeld: Running exclusively with the first unit at this point, he is catching everything thrown his way and looks potentially like the best tight end on the field.

WR Kenbrell Thompkins: Had the Philadelphia media saying, “Who is this guy again?” after making catch after catch after catch in team drills.

LB Jamie Collins: Got a lot of work with the first unit, especially in nickel and dime situations. At one point, he was lined up across from Cooper.

Tom Brady was outstanding. He commanded the offense with pristine form against a live defense for the first time, and it was impressive. Brady completed 20-of-20 passes in 1-on-1s, 7-of-7 passes in 7-on-7s and 17-of-21 passes in 11-on-11s. Two of his incompletions were drops – Kenbrell Thompkins after slipping while coming out of his break, and Danny Amendola on a quick slant in the end zone.

Good list of guys to watch on Friday night. Would also throw the safety play in there as well.
