Patriots football is back! Yes, it still on the preseason, but this is where the journey to the Super Bowl begins. Or, as BB would say, establishing a base level of performance from which to build.
The biggest things? No injuries and finding out the areas of weakness. As some might suspect, I’m very curious to watch the defense, especially the quality of the pass rushers, because if you have a good pass rush it will put a lot less pressure on the secondary.
Can the young standouts like Kenbrell Thompkins and Zach Sudfeld continue to flash in game action? Or will under-the-radar types like Duron Harmon and Dane Fletcher suddenly show up when the bullets are real?
There’s nothing like almost-stress-free Patriots football watching, it should be a fascinating evening.

Even if Tom Brady starts and plays a series or two, Mallett still figures to get the bulk of the playing time. And not to overstate things, but this preseason is incredibly important for both Mallett and the Patriots. If he plays well, the Patriots can try to trade him next offseason before his contract runs out in 2014. And he can prove to the rest of the league that he’s ready to be a starting quarterback. Last preseason, Mallett completed 33 of 67 passes (49.3 percent) with three touchdowns, one interception, and a 70.5 passer rating.

Collection of tweets as the national media gets their first look at the 2013 Pats…
The Patriots offense was the biggest surprise of my training camp tour. Despite several key losses, they were very crisp. #Brady

Practice over. Every drill done at half speed. Felt like Brady threw every single pass at Sudfeld

First time I ever remember seeing four safeties on the field at once – McCourty, Gregory, Harmon and Adrian Wilson.

Counting down the top NFL free agents of 2014, from 100-51 | The MMQB with Peter King Bedard has Garrett Graham (TE/Hou), Jared Allen (DE/Minn) and LeGarrette Blount (RB/NE) as the best Pats fits. All make good sense to me. Tight end and defensive end must be addressed in free agency, you’re not going to […]
