Stevan Ridley, Ras-I Dowling struggle in first day of contact drills | masslive.com

Another big day for wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins and Kamar Aiken. Both players got off the line well and made several nice plays. Thompkins has been used almost exclusively on the outside, while Aiken has lined up both on the inside and outside. Aiken had a nice back-shoulder catch during one-on-one drills. Probably rookie Josh Boyce’s best practice. He runs crisp routes, got off the line well and had flashed better hands after dropping a few passes Saturday. He’s received snaps at all three receiver spots.

Daily training camp overreaction: Kamar Aiken ready to dominate all comers – Going Deep – Boston.com

At 6’2" and 215 pounds, Aiken has the kind of size that’s been missing from the Patriots depth chart at receiver for the past few years as the team has struggled to find players to win matchups on the outside. Over the first few days of camp, we’ve seen him line up both outside and in the slot. He has shown an impressive ability to get off jams and to make catches in traffic. His drops have been few and far between. That’s about as positive a review as a receiver can get at this point.

Standouts RG Marcus Cannon – Held his ground against the power of DL Tommy Kelly (6-6, 310) and quickness of DEs Jermaine Cunningham (6-3, 252) and Justin Francis (6-4, 270). Kelly powered through him on one rep, but Cannon – stepping in for starter Dan Connolly (apparently not yet fully cleared for contact after offseason shoulder surgery) for most of the practice – looks like he’s off to a strong start in camp.

Dont’a Hightower on Mayo. “He knows every position, not just the LB and the DL. He knows what the CB and the safeties have to do.”

i’m really excited about how finally having good players on both sides of the ball can help the entire team get better. dobson and boyce should get better each week practicing against good corners like talib and dennard. collins harmon and wilson should always be ready to face tightends and shifty wr’s because they go up against amendola gronk and the like every week in practice. i’m just so hyped to see how this team develops over time into playoff form!

Agreed, everything has been pretty positive the first few days of camp in all the areas we have been most focused on. The only bad stuff: Armond Armstead being MIA with a mysterious new illness, and Stevan Ridley’s double fumbles on the first day in pads.
